LED PROJECT / CHAMPS-ELYSEES, PARIS, FRANCE

looked good when turned on at night. They wanted to reverse the modern shift towards festive lighting schemes that were magnificent at night but ugly during the daylight hours. By setting the LEDs to 20% illumination during the day, the rings are lifted by their own ethereal glow. In addi- tion to this, mirrored discs were also hung from the branches of each tree. As these move in the breeze they provide a dynamic twinkle that is equally effective during both day and night. “It really is the ultimate in eco lighting,” says Vermeulen. “During the day it catches the sunlight and at night it reflects the façade lighting and the lighting from the rings. It worked better than we ever imagined.”

Using 3D Studio Max software, the team had already done visual models to find the optimum number of trees to use – too few and the effect would lack impact; too many and the scheme would look messy, as well as being prohibitively expensive. A final total of 200 trees was agreed to hit the best balance. Next, an MA Lighting grandMA

DEUTSCH

RGB LED

II desk was used to create a schedule of set chase sequences – its scripting op- tions providing the most convenient way of controlling the 5,700 outputs (200 trees with three rings, each with a separate inner and outer edge of LEDs that both require three channels for RGB control). To tackle the programming, they split the trees on the avenue into groups of between seven and ten, as this was deemed about the limit of what shoppers can take in from any one viewpoint. Sequences draw from a library of 67 colours selected by the ACT team, including thirteen hues of white and only seven pure saturations. For the majority of the time, colours gently morph through different combinations, although there are settings in place to mark special occasions such as New Year’s Eve when the whole avenue will provide a visual countdown to midnight followed by a spectacular display that promises to rival the fireworks from the nearby Eiffel Tower.

The Champs-Elysées illuminations are set to run through until January 11th.

Mirrored discs hang in the branches of the illuminated trees, reflecting back not just the LED rings but also light from the building facades and passing cars. An unexpected consequence of using the discs comes during the day, when the whole avenue twinkles with reflected sunlight. Photographs: Eric Mercier
