24/03/2011 Speaker Meeting Xavier Woodward
New Port on the Thames T
he direct competition comes
from the two other deep sea ports, Felixstowe and Southampton although the company is a part shareholder of the Southampton port. One of the ways to overcome the traffic and cost problem is to build the distribution warehouses on sight so the goods can be sorted and made into smaller loads before making the final journey to the consumer. In theory this will take 2000 trucks a day off the road system and this should save both money and time. Felixtowe for example, has to send all its‟ containers some distance along the busy A14 to a distribution centre at another site. There will however be more local traffic and Junction 30 on the M25 will have to be altered a little (at a cost of about £11 Million) to accommodate this development. This will not be completed until at least 2015. Other road traffic developments that may play a part in affecting the port and potential road problems are the planned „new‟ bridge across the Thames (there is a possibility this may happen) and the removal of the barriers. In both cases DP World is encouraging these
developments but there is no getting away from the fact that the company does have problems with the government and „planning‟. There has however been a commitment made to Essex CC and the A13 that they
will widen the road at some time in the future (over the next 10yrs) as the junction does need re-modeling. The railway also needs re-structuring.
T
he earliest the port will begin operations is November 2013 but
it will be another 5 to 7 years before full completion. By which time some 2000 jobs will have been created in the port and many more jobs in the park itself.
A E
t the completion of the talk Xavier conducted a lively and
interesting Question and Answer session from which the following facts emerged:- 12,000 people will be employed in all , each ships holds 14,000 containers, and £150,000,000 of off sight payments have already been committed!
ditor’s comments-Apologies for any inaccurate facts and figures. The talk was so interest- ing and full of facts that all notes made were in a ‘shorthand’ form which can be problematic when converting to full script!
