New Port on the Thames
dredged and the resultant mud/soil is being used to create the new port. This development is unique in several ways. Unlike Tilbury and some other ports, the development company is not enlarging an existing port; they are cre- ating a brand new port and are working with a 'blank canvas‟. As a result they are able to take and use the best ideas from all the ports around the world.

was very impressed with our speaker as he told us of the plans
and progress of the New Port on the Thames. Xavier pointed out that this is in addition to the port being developed at Tilbury. The new port is intended for deep sea vessels so the two ports will not be in direct competition with each other. This port brings with it some serious challenges, the biggest of which is the need to create a channel deep enough for these huge vessels. A 300 metre wide channel is being

and re-development of the various road and rail networks that will be needed to service the port. An unavoidable consequence of such a big develop- ment and the nature of the business will be an increase in traffic. The com- pany has planning permission for 9.5 million square feet and occupies an area of 2square miles on the old Shellhaven sight.
