Presidents Lunch 8-May-2011 Orsett Hall W W

hen Presi- dent John

and Philippa decided to break with tradition and have a lunch in- stead of a dinner and dance they must have been a little concerned that the format might not work.

But-Work it did!

ith Norman working closely alongside John and Phillipa and with Club

Service pitching in to tie up loose ends all we had to do was wait patiently for the 8th. May to come round. It was a little bit strange putting on a lounge suit instead a dinner suit and it was definitely strange getting ready in the morning but that aside everything went well and everyone duly arrived at Orsett Hall in good time for some excellent „Fellowship‟. One or two of the guests were welcomed with a sudden „Orsett Greeting‟ as the heavens opened but most of us missed that little downpour and arrived in bright sunshine.

W

hen the time came for us to take our seats Secretary Geoff guided us

through opening formalities in a most informal way and very soon we were being served with an excellent meal. On my table there was nothing but

fulsome praise for the food and all too soon we were ready for the dreaded „speeches‟.

A

fter a heartily sung „Happy

Birthday‟ to Eddie Percival the Hornchurch and Upminster Rotary

Choral Group aided digestion with a some- what spirited if slightly under-rehearsed rendition of Julie Andrews 70th. Birthday song. Sung to the tune of My Favourite Things the sentiments of the words were felt to be rather appropriate for our age group. One or two of the more unmusical‟ members complained of heartburn but after a few more slugs of wine they were fine. then had to deliver my

I appropriately „rude‟ speech to

and about our revered President and I think it went OK because Philippa later said she was „so excited‟ she compared the event to a wedding with her and John as the bride and groom and me

giving the „best man‟s speech‟. I think it was a compliment! (I thought it was rather funny the way I was „tapped up‟ by our esteemed JVP Gerry who was casually interested in how long I was going to speak for as there was money riding on the total time of all speeches made during the afternoon. In the end it was Norman‟s sister Sue who had to be escorted home by Securicor as she was the winner who guessed the nearest time.)
