Pittsburgh City Center, which changed its name to DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel and Suites Pittsburgh Downtown; the Doubletree Hotel Pittsburgh Airport has changed over to DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh Airport; and in Monroeville, the Doubletree Pittsburgh- Monroeville Convention Center changed its name to DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh - Monroeville Convention Center.
Rivers Hotel, a 107-room boutique property, is being planned in Pittsburgh. Under the Choice Hotels International Ascend Collection, the hotel will feature a mix of king suites and rooms. The proposed construction project has a target opening date of late 2012.
The 178-room Hyatt Place Pittsburgh- North Shore, located near PNC Park and Heinz Field, opened recently. The hotel boasts complimentary wireless Internet access, over 2,600-square feet of flexible, high-tech meeting space and a fitness center.
Horizon Properties Group opened the 142-suite Cambria Suites Hotel adja- cent to the Consol Energy Center, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ hockey arena. The hotel includes an indoor swimming pool, fitness center and a 500 space parking garage. Plans are in the works to add a restaurant on a lower level of the hotel.
In the historic Deutschtown neighbor- hood of Pittsburgh’s North Side, the Priory Hotel has completed an expan- sion and renovation that adds 17 new guestrooms (bringing its total to 42), 600 square feet of additional meeting space, and a larger fitness space. Also, the building is now handicap accessi- ble, and added “Monk’s Bar,” a 14-seat tavern designed to resemble a tradi- tional European hotel bar.
Concord Hospitality Enterprises has opened a 124-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel at Settlers Ridge in Robinson Township. Its state-of-the-art
property design, first in the Marriott chain, is the prototype for all future LEED-compliant Courtyards. Rooms and suites offer complimentary high- speed wireless Internet access, large desk with ergonomic chair, and Marriott’s signature bedding. The prop- erty features a fitness center, indoor saline swimming pool, on site dining at The Bistro, a 24-hour business center and more than 1,200 square feet of meeting space.
The David L. Lawrence Convention Center Riverfront Plaza opened in May 2011. The project spans 1,300 feet of riverfront and includes a 3,000-square foot public event plaza and an elevated walkway. There are 10 tie-ups for com- mercial boats and 27 tie-ups for recre- ational boats. With the completion of the plaza, there is now a continuous pedestrian and bicycle riverfront trail from Point State Park through Pittsburgh’s Cultural District, past the convention center and into the Strip District, completing a section of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail.
Additionally, the pedestrian path through the convention center’s water- falls no longer dead-ends at the river, instead it becomes an additional pedestrian connection to the city’s extensive riverfront trail system.
Pittsburgh’s Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is going to the outer limits of green in constructing its new education-and-research center. Plans are to create a “living building” with a self-contained energy and water sup- ply. As part of the “Living Building Challenge,” Phipps’ 20,000-square foot Center for Sustainable Landscapes will be a structure that is “net zero energy” with on site renew- able sources providing all energy needs. When complete, it will exceed the standards required for LEED plat- inum certification, the most demanding standards on the books today.

At 720,000-square feet, the $321 million Consol Energy Center seats 18,000 and includes a full-service restaurant, public bars and a food court on both the main and upper level concourse, plus several retail shops and an enclosed bridge that connects it to a new parking garage.
The center serves as a multi-use build- ing, also playing host to concerts, cir- cuses, various stage shows and sport- ing events, including the city’s new arena football team, Pittsburgh Power. A replacement for the Mellon Arena, Consol Energy Center is the first LEED certified National Hockey League arena in the nation.
Stage AE is an exciting new entertain- ment complex located on Pittsburgh’s North Shore, across the street from Heinz Field, which is home to the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers.
