ness and government meetings through- out the state.

Noted Blair, "Association and SMERF mar- kets are often similar in booking patterns, which include end of the week or week- end programs. Both groups are pulling from an audience with common interests to provide quality face-to-face time and networking opportunities. Oftentimes one difference between these two market seg- ments is the meeting planning process. Typically, associations have professional staff to coordinate and contract their meeting and convention business, where- as a committee or volunteers run many of the SMERF meetings. Booking windows are also different for these two groups, as associations book their programs much further in advance than SMERF markets."

Blair said that Delaware offers groups within these specialized market segments a convenient, affordable, flexible and fun place at which to host meetings. The state is centrally located in the mid-Atlantic region and is easily accessible. Blair also noted that groups could save up to 14 per- cent in taxes alone compared to neigh- boring states. “Delaware’s lodging tax is only 8-10 percent, and there is no tax on goods and services including rentals, food and beverage, entertainment, parking and audio-visual.

Consequently, groups can

do more with less, making Delaware a responsible place to do business.”

Additionally, he said that service-driven venues are flexible and creative when it comes to working with groups. Plus, the state’s diverse offerings are a big draw for these particular markets, and include his- toric, art, cultural, gaming, sports and coastline attractions as well as tax-free shopping, dining and entertainment.

According to Kaminetsky, "Most hotels in the Lehigh Valley don't charge for parking, and hotel taxes are really low. We don't have a lot of 'extra' charges that other areas often have."

Kaminetsky noted that local attractions in the Lehigh Valley are a big draw, too, and include many with extremely recogniza- ble names like the Martin Guitar Company,

Crayola Factory, Sands

Bethlehem Casino and its restaurant options by famed chef Emeril Lagasse on site, to name just a few.
