purple crocuses are being planted throughout the UK and that includes

Haver-

Events in Havering Schools O

On Saturday 9th October Ro- tarians from the Hornchurch and Upminster and Havering East Rotary Clubs arrived at The Green, Wennington Vil- lage at 11am. to meet Rita Nastri from Street Care, to- gether with residents from

The Green, to plant 4,000 pur- ple crocus corms as another part of Rotary International‟s campaign. By the time the Rotarians and their wives ar- rived several of the residents had already begun to plant the corms and in a very short time the large group of volunteers was hard at work shortly encouraged by the arrival of members of the local fire sta- tion just a few yards along the road. With so many volunteers on hand the job was soon done, and most peo- ple were away before noon. The whole event was a most enjoyable one with eve- rybody getting on extremely well with one another, with the keen involvement of the local resi- dents ensuring that this was a real community event.

R

otary‟s thanks must go to Mark Jones, head of

Havering‟s Street Care, and his colleague Rita who were most enthusiastic about the project from the moment he was told of Rotary‟s initiative. Mark took it upon himself to order the corms and suggested the planting at Wennington, and he has plans to distribute another 4,000

around Havering, including planting crocus corms in every large metal flower tub throughout the Borough

H

avering‟s Parks Department, with the

encouragement of the Rotary Club of Romford, have also joined in the Rotary initiative and have ordered 4,000 crocus corms. It is planned that these corms will be planted in the next week or so at Lodge Farm Park, Main Road, Romford (opposite Raphael Park) Crocuses in Bloom in Havering

forward to seeing the results of ours and the Borough‟s ef- forts, sometime in late Febru- ary 2011, when we hope to see a purple swathe across the Borough at the same time as we are celebrating Rotary Awareness Week and undertaking collections to help meet Bill Gates‟ challenge and consign polio to history.
