3 Message from our President I I

t is an honour and a privilege to be President of The Rotary Club of Hornchurch and

Upminster, which so far has been a steep learning curve, working with the various committee chairmen and all of the members of the club, on how hard everyone works to make our club successful.

t was, however, very sad that we have lost some memorable characters from our club -

David Tirmizey, Eric Knight and most recently Bert Evans.

A

fter a Club presentation from Dr Sathanandan and his secretary Bernie

(Bernadette) I was pleased that - through the International committee led by Eddie Truman - the club agreed to make a donation to The Sylvia Wright Trust towards the purchase of an ambulance to help the villagers in the poorer parts of India, I mention this because it demonstrates how charity can expand, as my daughter Simone is now on the committee assisting in the work of Dr Sathanandan and his colleges. Perhaps I can convince her to become a Rotarian.

T

he Purple Pinkie campaign got off to a good start with a combined effort from

Hornchurch & Upminster, Havering East and Romford clubs. George Larkey organised a planting at Engayne School which was supported by Ron, Dick and myself. George assured me that because his granddaughter was holding the spade in our photo she did not really have to do all the work.

A I

nother joint effort by the Havering clubs was at Ravensbourne School in

Harold Hill, which was led by our Mayor Councillor Pam Light along with a team of staff from Havering council. Well done, Dick, for the publicity we gained from these events. It was great fun for the children as well……...

am sure the Old Folks party will be the usual success, and I am looking forward to

that as well as our own Christmas party. Don‟t forget to get out your coat and hats as the

Christmas collections draw near -make sure your name is on the sheet as we need all the help we can get.

I

will also be looking forward to our annual race night organised by Ray, as usual. I am sure it will be another successful event.

N I

early half way through the Rotary year I must say that at the beginning it appeared

to be a little daunting, my being new to the position. However, with a first class secretary in Geoff, assistant secretary David, Senior Vice George and past President Brian how can any one go wrong? Not forgetting all of you members, as so far this year it has been a pleasure.

am very sorry that Ray Needham has been obliged to forgo the post of incoming Junior

Vice President due to the problems he and Syl- via are experiencing with their home. On be- half of the club I would like to wish them all the best in the New Year, and I hope they will soon be back in their home. My thanks go to Gerry Harrington for agreeing to take over as JVP, and I wish him the very best as he moves toward becoming our President in 2012 – for the 2nd time.

H

ave a healthy and prosperous Christmas and New Year, from the President and all

his family John Crowder 3
