Rotary Walk to support Saint Francis Hospice

Sponsored Walk 2010 O

nce again The Club and its supporters have ensured the

success of this annual fund raising event in aid of St Francis Hospice. The sponsorship has been collected and from the efforts of a modest number of walkers this year approximately

£3500.00 will be donated to St Francis, this figure will be increased with the addition of Gift Aid, tax refunded for the

last two year, of over £800.00 W

e are fortunate in having a small dedicated group of supporters

who have over many years made a substantial contribution to this event. There are of course our own Members (families and relations) who provide the back bone of the money raised. The effort made is incredible with one or two raising substantial amounts. We are also fortunate that Barleys Bank double up on Peter‟s sponsorship each year and we have in the past received similar support from other financial groups when a member of their staff take part. I never fail to be impressed by all the work done in raising the money. Thanks must also go to all the Members who work on the day with administration, marshalling or organising car parking, all play an im- portant part in ensuring the success of the walk.

E

ach year I set Tony the task of finding a route for the walk,

wherever possible we try to provide a new route which must of course have all the appropriate ingredients, a suitable

start point with (free) parking, toilets etc., and halfway point, with 7 to 8 miles of good country walking (no ploughed fields to cross). This year we chose to move out to the Essex Wildlife Trusts‟ Nature Reserve at Langdon Hills near Basildon which met our criteria and is set in a very interesting area. Unfortunately the poor uptake by walkers may have indicated that we moved out too far into Essex. Finding the site may have put some off, a number of our own Members having some difficulty in finding it on the day! The Nature Reserve and adjoining parkland used provided an excellent walk with good views and countryside it was a pity that some locals chose to remove and alter the marked route on the day which resulted in some walkers (Norman) adding a mile or so to the distance.

I

am sure in view of the successful outcome we will arrange the walk

again next year and will be looking for your support; we will however consider a route nearer home.

O
