26 friend and a first-class Rotarian
BERT EVANS How it hurts to lose a good
B
ert was an archetypal Englishman. A handsome
man, always immaculately dressed. He had a great sense of humour, sometimes a little waspish, but always with a kindly meaning. He was always ready with a warm and friendly greeting for his friends and strangers. He was a connoisseur of good food and liquid bever- ages, and an exceptionally good cook. Indeed, when friends were invited to his home the generos- ity of the hospitality they re- ceived was unrivalled.
B A
ert had four loves in his life. They were first, his
lovely wife Ann and then his children, Freemasonry and Ro- tary.
s far as Rotary is con- cerned, he first became a
Rotarian in the Barking Club in 1964 and later moved to Haver- ing North. Bert never sought the limelight but had a distinguished and successful year as President of Havering North in 1979/80. Bert was a “behind the scenes” Rotarian, and did much valuable work out of the public eye. One of the things he enjoyed most was in the preparation of the Rotary Christmas sleigh for it's annual collecting tour of the streets just before each Christ- mas. There were usually five Rotarians involved in this. They were Bert, Jim Beecham, the late George Hegarty, Ray Leach and Alan Booty. The latter was the odd one out, being the only
non-mason in the team. These after- noon sessions at the yard of Harold Wood Coaches were always great fun, much of it in- stigated by Bert.
B
ert was also a talented
Master of Ceremonies and presided over many happy Rotary and Inner Wheel functions. He always put a lot of work in preparing for these events, and made it look so easy on the night whatever the type of function.
B
ert will be remembered fondly by many Rotarians
when they recall their first days in Rotary. He always made a point of meeting them when they arrived for meetings, Introduc-
ing them to other members, explaining things that needed explaining and just being really friendly. He made being a new Rotarian easy and really enjoyable. We shall all miss him and remember him with great pleasure.
