29 BERT EVANS

A man who contributed to many charitable organisations in many ways.

I

first met Bert „only‟ a few short years ago. I was then a guest - and prospective member - of

our Hornchurch Club. At that very first meeting Bert made me feel extremely welcome, and spent a lot of time with me at my induction and the following weeks, even though it was not Bert that introduced me to our Club. Bert made the effort with his natural warm and helpful manner to settle me into our Rotary Club. At a later stage I was then convinced by Bert that I should re-establish my Masonic links and was introduced to many of his own friends within that organisation. I well remember the respect expressed by Bert‟s many Masonic friends for his knowledge in Freemasonry and his benevolent ways, similar to the respect that I noticed Bert always received from Fellow Rotarians.

B

ert‟s deep knowledge of Rotary, and his fun involvement from the NOISY table, has

been a highlight in my Rotary involvement. Bert normally sat at the same seat and table and his magnetism drew others to him. In the photo on view his seat become vacant as a sign of respect, something that I have never seen at a Rotary meeting before!

also had the pleasure over the

past couple of years of revisiting my previous Rotary Club of Barking with Bert & Ann, where Bert was also a member (over 40 years ago) for many years. We have both shared many friends from the same Club, who now have an annual meeting where they invite all past Presidents and members.

always noticed that Bert was never shy in putting his hand in his pocket to help any

brother or fellow in need, and always made sure that he had time available to help, no matter what the problem.

realise that many in our Club have known Bert much longer than me and probably know much

more of the good things that he has done for Rotary, evidenced in the many photos that I have had the pleasure to publish in the BULL. I would like to express in words my feelings for Bert, which I assume would be similar to all our members and friends. “Bert - your life amongst us has been Special and YOU will be sadly missed”
