27 BERT EVANS
The loss of Bert will be felt by countless Friends for many years to come
W T
ith the passing of our good friend
The Bert Evans BGR Award.
Bert we lose a very coveted but little known award - the Bert Evans BGR Award. I do not know if I was a recipient of this award myself, although I would like to think so, but I do know for a fact that many members of this club, and some from other clubs, were indeed honoured recipients.
he BGR was usually conferred during a one-to-
one conversation (the recipient was not present or part of the conversation). Whilst discuss- ing a club event and perhaps the activities of a particular member Bert would lean forward and say “ Joe Bloggs” and then pausing, as if for effect, “Bloody Good Rotarian”! That was it, in three simple words, the deed was done and the hard work and commitment of that particular colleague was summed up perfectly.
N O
ow, in the weeks, months and years ahead, we must
all continue to put Service above Self in the hope that he is looking down upon us, weighing us up and every now and again dishing out another BGR.
n a personal note I shall miss my colleague and
friend for all the advice and the kind words of encouragement he would utter. It does not mat- ter who we are, how old we are and how clever we think we are - it is always a good feeling to have one‟s efforts appreciated and commented upon. The selfish part of me wanted Bert to be around during my Presi- dential year, but it was not to be, so I will have to take an- other bit of Evansian advice and „just get on with it!‟
I
t was wonderful to see such a good turnout of
fellow Rotarians, Lodge members and friends at All
27
Saints Church, Writtle, supporting Bert‟s loving family and paying their respects. Knowing the family as I do they will have been extremely appreciative of the support, and proud of the fact that Bert‟s good work and friendship was recognised by all present and many more that were unable to be there on the day.
T
he service was very traditional and dignified,
as was Bert, (most of the time) and enhanced by some well timed, but well appreciated, humorous anecdotes.
Bert would have approved!
