Still Active on-behalf of Rotary whilst on Holiday in Spain
Our Treasurer M
embers will no doubt remember that at the
request of our International Committee a vote was recently passed through Club and Council to support a project in Sri Lanka, where the after-effects of the tsunami as well as the recent civil unrest are still being felt.
W
orking with Eddie Truman and Mutel
Kerr, I am pleased to say that a contact I initially made through the English- speaking International Rotary Club of Guadalmina, Spain, brought about an opportunity for us to help. A contact I met there - a lady named Joy Butler who was on holiday at the time relocated to Sri Lanka immediately after the disaster as a worker for the charity MANACARE, who - in turn - work with the Ro- tary Club of Colombo Mid Town. Joy is a committed Rotarian - she joined the Colombo Mid Town club as part of her development of contacts there to support her work, and the following is a summation from their current President Ishara Gunawardena. MANACARE is a British charity with projects in many countries around the world (Editors note - they have also recently completed a successful project working through the Windermere Rotary Club). Joy Butler, who is currently our Joint Director for Vocational Service, came to Sri Lanka

sustainability projects operated in the village include Sewing, Candle Making, Soap Making, Brick Making and Carpentry, with Jewellery Making to be included very soon. In addition to these opportunities Manacare offer many other things such as Montessori School, Music Classes, Computer Classes, a Medical Centre, Community Centre, Sports Clubs, and Training Schemes for many locals.

Our club has also success- fully completed projects pertaining to giving back. Our club was the first ever to send a team of plastic surgeons and orthopaedic surgeons to Pakistan when the recent earthquake hit the mountain regions of their country.

in making a better future for many women prisoners by providing sewing machines to be used to train them to sustain their families. Our club will forward to your club periodical progress re- ports to keep you regularly updated.
