Cultural and Heritage Tourism Development We are particularly lucky in Wales as our rich cultural inheritance can serve the future well- being of our communities. Visitors wish to experience what is local, or special, about a particular place. Heritage varies very greatly from area to area. It gives each place a local distinctiveness. This local distinctiveness can be a source of pride to the people who live there and an attraction to people from elsewhere.

Local heritage can contribute towards creating a new tourism dimension. This will encourage year-round visits to the area and thus extend the tourism season.


An area’s heritage includes wildlife habitats and species, natural landscapes and man-made landscapes.


 Natural and man-made heritage includes:- − Wildlife habitats and species − Natural and man-made landscapes, including agricultural and industrial − Towns and villages, rich in detail − Historic and industrial traditional buildings − Many other artefacts, such as graveyards, bridges and windmills. − Traditional transport links – historic railways and canals.


 Alongside this ‘fixed’ heritage is a great wealth of inherited culture: − The history of people − Their folklore, language and religion − Their traditions: in music and dance, in food and drink, in arts and crafts and industries.


− Local people themselves can be a vast source of information.  Local people can be trained and act as guides to the heritage of the area.


 Existing cultural events and festivals can be linked into the tourism offer (see festivals & events section)
