The sixth form groups have enjoyed a range of presentations from many guest speakers this term.


MIDWIFE FROM WEXHAM PARK HOSPITAL VISITS PUPILS


to the learners some of the equipment used in the unit, this consisted of a blood pressure monitor that is tight around an adult fi nger, however sometimes too big for a baby’s arm. She showed photos of babies who were born at 24 weeks weighing 1lb 4oz and now happily playing at nurs- ery aged 4 with no diffi culties. Julie also explained the emotional aspect of her role when supporting parents whose babies are in the Special Care Baby Unit.


J LEARNING ABOUT DOWNS SYNDROME A


mother and her 3 month old daughter who has Downs Syndrome came into the Year 12 and


13 classes to support learning about children with special needs. The mother spoke about the par- ents emotions and support for her family. This was a very worthwhile discussion as the mother an- swered all questions the learners asked. The baby was very content, happy to let the girls play with her and curious about the new environment.


INTERACTIVE CONNEXIONS LESSON


gave information about fi nding employment and training in the workplace for those who are better suited to practical learning, following a year of excellent placement in community groups such as nurseries and schools.

CHILDCARE 4 U A dynamic speaker from Childcare 4u assisted Year 13 Diploma in Childcare and Education Level 3 with interview techniques during a class. She was very enthusiastic encouraging the girls to join in with role play and quick fi re interview questions. Since this lesson we have received an email from Childcare 4u to share with the class on vacancies they have for staff .


A career route some of the Year 13 Diploma in Childcare and Education Level 3 have expressed is to work within Social Services. To support this choice of career we invited a speaker from Wycombe District Council to explain her role when supporting children in care with education. This talk enabled those who have interest in Social Services to search deeper into a career in this fi eld.
