Account of Stanley Spencer Gallery and Competition By Antonia Miles
“On the 5th and 6th of May, ten year 8 students
participated in a Business Enterprise Competition. On the 5th May, the day began with a visit to the Stanley Spencer
Gallery in Cookham. We found out about Stanley’s life and about his main infl uences as a successful artist. We were then told that the task for the business enterprise was to
make the gallery fun and appealing to children of our age group.
After viewing the gallery, we returned to school and
discussed our ideas with our groups and decided on the roles and responsibilities that each person would have. The groups carried on with the task for the rest of the afternoon and worked on the presentation of the task
the next morning, before returning to a primary school in Cookham, where we would present our ideas to the other schools and judges.
Great Marlow Team 2 won the “Best Presentation” in the competition and prizes were given to those team members. I think that I have gained both teamwork
and time management skills from the experience and thoroughly enjoyed being a part of it.”
My Review of Stanley Spencer Gallery and Competition Great Marlow School entered two teams of fi ve into a gifted and talented
project in Cookham. We got to visit the Stanley Spencer Gallery to be given
our brief. We were given the interesting task of, how to make learning about Stanley Spencer and a visit to the Stanley Spencer Gallery fun for young
people. We fi rst decided to allocate each other jobs to each person in the group according to the three tasks we had been set. I was given the Job of a team
leader. So although had no specifi c task to handle I had to oversee everyone and everything.
We were told we were going to present our work to a team of judges. So we choose to display our work on a large black board and backed all our work
with white card. We also had two, girls Arifah and Evie who read out the script we had written earlier. This was unlike any other team because they only used Microsoft power point. The Judges clearly liked the way we had presented our work because we won the Best Presentation award.
I believe that I have gained a lot out of this experience. Not only did we get to learn about Stanley Spencer’s work and life in detail, I think that my ability to work and lead a team has improved.
