SCHOOL SPORTS CO-ORDINATOR REPORT SUMMER TERM SPORTS AWARDS EVENING

record attendance and sold out event at a capacity of 300 on the hottest Friday night of the year. This was the Great Marlow Sports Awards.

A

A record number of certifi cates were given out demonstrating the massive achievement of students from all year groups in the extensive range of extra curricular sports now off ered here at Great Marlow School. So many that in fact we had to leave some more recreational activities off the list on the evening. The certifi cates and trophies were presented by Guest Speaker and Commonwealth Triple Jump Champion Julian Golley. Julian was very well received by our students and an inspiration to them as he spoke and signed autographs during the half hour interval in his “break” for the evening!

BYE BYE MISS BENNETT

Miss Bennett has been covering Mrs Seeley’s Maternity cover since Easter and has been a hit since the fi rst day. The students have responded magnifi cently to her and will be very sad to see her leave in July. In her short time here Miss Bennett has made a massive impact on the extra curricular opportunities leading extra curricular clubs in Free Running, Rounders, Tag Rugby, Athletics and Basketball. The PE Department would like to wish Miss Bennett the best of luck (but not in extra curricular competition against GMS) in her new position at Piggot’s School Reading.

At the same time we would like to welcome Ms Lovell to continue in the absence of Mrs Seeley. Ms Lovell has a massive amount of PE experience and will be an asset to the PE Department.

SCHOOL SPORTS PARTNERSHIP/CSLA/ SPORTS LEADERS

Once again it has been an exceptionally busy term. With the blessing of excellent summer weather we have managed to co-ordinate and successfully host 6 partnership sports festivals entertaining over 600 primary school students across this summer term. The festivals have included, Basketball, Tennis, Athletics, Rounders, Rowing and The Year 6 games. Our sports leaders and CSLA students have been absolutely superb in their respective roles at

all of these events. To their credit and testament to the quality of what they do, the primary school teachers have delivered numerous comments, emails and even letters thanking our Sports Leaders for the outstanding quality of their delivery and ability to lead, engage, encourage and ultimately inspire the primary school students. This huge positive impact has already sparked great interest from other local primary schools which have asked if they can attend the GMS sports festivals in the next academic year. Due to the extent of the festivals some brave but fortunate year 9 prospective Sports Leaders were handed the leadership baton for the year 6 games. Once again they were a credit to the school, and all of them have said they will be taking the Sports Leaders Course which will run as a period 6 lesson starting in September.

OTHER THINGS!

This term has seen Early Bird clubs commence at GMS. Each Wednesday and Friday at 7.30 in the ‘am’ the Gym is opened for any budding potential Table Tennis Superstars. This is a very low risk but rewarding activity making it perfect for a recreational club before school!

Every lunchtime this term, when exams permit us to make some noise in the Gym, there has been an abundance of activities going on including Cricket, Badminton, Basketball and Dodgeball. These activites attract and entertain over 60 students each week.

NEXT YEAR

In addition to the opportunities provided this year we are looking at expanding the provision for GMS students even further. Already lined up for next year is a Gym and Dance Evening, competitive and regular fi xtures in Badminton, Basketball, Rounders, Girls Football, boy’s county football, and Cricket. We as a department have also created links with Wycombe District Swim Club and will be fi elding teams in swimming galas starting in September. Finally we are in the process of planning an international sports tour to hopefully go ahead in 2011 in addition to a secret but very adventurous challenge, which will require the students to be at the absolute peak of physical condition. Watch this space!
