NEW LIBRARY SYSTEM. I
n the New Year we took the decision to update our library system. We purchased Eclipse from Micro
Librarian Systems Ltd This is a well established product used by many schools across the UK but which had undergone a major upgrade this year which provided us with some great new features.
Eclipse is internet based and is there for accessible by every pupil from home. Pupils can keep a track of their own accounts and produce their own book reviews which then appear on the system.
Eclipse contains over 60,000 web links and these are updated constantly. Book covers appear on the screen as well as information on each title. Eclipse also ties into the Accelerated Reader programme providing book levels and AC book numbers for our stock. We can also can catalogue and provide links to any form of media. Books, DVDs, fi lm clips, text fi les, documents, photographs or any products help on the school servers. Links have been provided to Eclipse via the VLE and school web sites.
Eclipse will be fully operational by September NEW WAYS TO READ.
One area where we do need to keep abreast is in how we read and access information. Laptops, PCs, Amazon Kindels, Sony E readers, Ipads and even Sony DS consoles can be used to down load and read books.
Why not try reading your next book online, its as easy as downloading a music track…
LIBRARY REFURBISHMENT.
We are on the verge of a major library refurbishment at the end of term the fi rst in the library in many years. This is most welcome and my thanks go out to Mr Nash who has been the driving force in getting this off the ground. It should be very exciting.
THANKS TO THE SUPERB LIBRARIANS!!
The librarians have put up with a lot of disruption this year never mind a 400% increase in their work load due to the success of the Accelerated Reader programme. Mrs Keeves and myself really appreciate all your eff orts and hard work have a great summer.
NEW LIBRARIANS
If there are any Year 7s or 8s going into Yr 8 or 9 who would like to be school librarians please come and see Mrs Keeves or myself. New recruits welcome.
Enjoy the break Mr S Farrelly
ACCELERATED READER PROGRAMME T
he scheme has been a huge success. Each pupil in year 7 and 8 is encouraged to target reading one
book every 2 weeks. Once the book is completed the pupils, either in library lessons or in their own time, complete a quiz on that book. Most quizzes are 10 questions with the target of 80% and 50% as a pass. Points are awarded based on diffi culty and word count. Points in turn convert in to certifi cates at the end of the year. Pupils read books at their own book level. Book levels are re tested every term and data is provided on book level reading age and national curriculum level for each pupil.
The teaching staff has regular data at the end of each lesson on what the pupils are reading, how well they are doing in quizzes, test scores and progress. This means we can instantly pick up on problems and encourage those who are doing well.
