TOP Gardeners have been busy gathering and submitting mountains of evidence required towards accreditation on the RHS Gardens for Schools Campaign. We were delighted to be awarded level 1 and also the level 2 accreditation. The school receives rewards for each level, plus, every half term we receive an additional reward for each level achieved. For achieving level 1 we received a mixed pack of various types of seeds and some eco friendly paper planting pots. For level 2 we received a hardback book by Gardeners’ World presenter Carol Klein ‘ Grow your own’ and will also be receiving £30 worth of Bulldog tools as part of our reward. Mrs Ludgate is at present gathering evidence to submit for the level 3 award.

T

he gardening club had a late start this year – something to do with the weather!

TOP Gardeners stands for Trading Our Produce Gardeners.

Its aim is to provide fruit, vegetables and herbs to the canteen for inclusion on that day’s menu. The money we receive goes towards compost, pots etc for the next year. Where possible we collect seeds, cuttings etc from the plants. TOP Gardeners is a non profi t making club.

Anyone in years 7, 8 and 9 can take part and we meet after school on a Monday (for more details, ask Mrs Ludgate), however, places are limited.

In previous years we have grown potatoes, carrots, strawberries in addition to our herbs and fl owers.

This year, for the fi rst time, we plan to grow (amongst other things) garlic so that the progression from bulb to the canteen’s garlic bread can be observed. We also experimented with potatoes, growing some in the shade and some in full sun to see what happened. This year’s crop of new potatoes were used for the salad bar and were delicious.

The tyres (donated from Chiltern Tyres a few years ago) in which the plants are grown are sited next to the canteen, making our carbon footprint probably one of the lowest ever! This also makes it easier for herbs to be picked for use in that day’s meals in the school canteen.

We’d like to increase the range of herbs grown and any donations, especially sage, would be gratefully received.

Last year, with the help of students working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award, we created a new fl ower bed with dwarf lilacs and variegated grasses. We have already added some summer bedding and 2 (purple variegated) corydalis to the bed this year.

The gardening club have almost completed a woodland area in the garden at the back of the staff room (see picture). We plan to add more ferns, violets and primroses.

We recently entered the Teachers’ TV Green Schools competition, submitting a written piece and a short video
