he Duke of Edinburgh Award has just completed its forth year. A cohort of 24 committed students - 14
at Bronze level, from Year 9, and 10 at Silver level, from Year 10. They must all complete an extensive training programme that culminates in receiving a smart Award certifi cate (bearing the Duke of Edinburgh’s signature) and badge. D of E is highly valued by Universities and Employers
The Award at both Bronze and Silver level breaks down into four components that run concurrently but last diff erent lengths of time.
At BRONZE LEVEL the participants are expected to spend:
24 hours over six months undertaking voluntary work for the community (the ‘Service’ section);
12 hours over three months learning or improving a skill (the ‘Skill’ section);
12 hours over three months undertaking a sport (the ‘Physical’ section); and
18 hours over six months learning expedition skills in theory and putting them into practise in the hills during two expeditions (the ‘Expedition’ section).
SILVER LEVEL is a step up - The participants are expected to spend:
24 hours over six months undertaking voluntary work for the community (the ‘Service’ section);
24 hours over six months learning or improving a skill (the ‘Skill’ section);
12 hours over three months undertaking a sport (the ‘Physical’ section); and
18 hours over six months learning expedition skills in theory and

The Bronze and Silver Awards are very highly regarded by employers and academic institutions as it proves that a young person has a good measure of common sense, creative thinking, practical problem-solving, planning skills, group work ability and good will. Bronze is commonly, though informally, regarded as being worth a GCSE, and Silver half an A-Level.
Bronze and Silver offi cially launches in the Hall on Monday 13th September 2010 at 6pm. Expedition training sessions will be from 3.10 – 4.10 in C11 every Monday and will start just after half term on the 19th October. More details can be found on the offi cial Award website:

Bronze expeditions take place in the Chilterns/100s and there are two of them, a ‘Practise’ and a ‘Final’, both lasting two days and one night each. The Silver expeditions take place in the South Downs/South coast and again there are two of them, a ‘Practise’ and a ‘Final’, this time both lasting three days and two nights each.
Next year the cost to each participant will be £35 for Bronze and £40 for Silver. There is a subsidy for those on free school meals. The money covers the cost of camping, insurance, maps, compasses and training. The expedition leaders will be Mr Bristow, Mrs Garwood, Mr. Taylor and Miss Bell.
