the growing mental

health problem is more than just in the mind.

Who we are

Mind Jersey is a local mental health charity that seeks to provide information and support for those people and their families and friends whom are experiencing mental illness. We do this so that as many of them as possible can lead full and active lives and play their full part in society.

It is important that we recognise that just as we all have physical health we also have mental health and that this can move up and

down on a spectrum. One in four people will experience a mental health

problem in any one year; it is

indiscriminate, can affect anyone and everyone reading this article will know someone that it has already touched. By 2020 depression will be the second most common

cause of ill health worldwide

What we do We sponsor the activities of an Independent Mental Health Advocate, whom provides invaluable support and advice, ensuring that those in need are heard and listened to. We employ a family and carer’s support worker who work closely with the families and friends of people experiencing mental health illness in looking after their loved ones. We have recently introduced a Peer Support scheme run by volunteers who have lived experience of mental health problems. We also maintain a number of properties that provide accommodation for those requiring support and this includes Camelot, a residential home for eight individuals requiring more intensive support.

Why we campaign to reduce stigma and increase understanding We campaign for a greater public understanding of mental illness and work closely with the statutory services seeking to influence decisions and policy that might lead to improvements in the range of mental health services provided. We have recruited two Mind

Ambassadors, Beth and Stephen whom are open, honest and courageous in speaking of their own lived experiences and recoveries. Their stories are featured in two excellent short films that we commissioned in late 2014 and can still be accessed via our website: www.mindjersey.org

Hitherto our campaigning has concentrated on those over 18 years of age. We believe that it is important our campaigns should now be extended to cover children and young people. There is recognition that additional and targeted support should be provided as some young people can be vulnerable, unaware of or unable to access services.

Mind Jersey also recognises the importance of promoting improved mental health in the workplace. Recently we joined with the Jersey Employment Trust (JET) in organising the ‘Able to Work’ conference which attracted over 200 delegates from a range of workplaces and was voted a resounding success. Delegates were invited, in groups, to
