SOME QUESTIONS FOR CAROL-ANN:

Question: What do you do to unwind at the end of a long day?

Answer: I get out on the water. It’s the only way I truly relax. Whether I am kite surfing, paddle boarding, surfing or swimming, as soon as I leave dry land behind me, all the day’s troubles melt away.

Question: What do you like the most about being an Associate? Answer: I love my clients and the variety of my day. Working for a small firm, my day is typically varied. I can be working on a multi-million pound corporate acquisition in the morning and advising the trustees of a family trust in the afternoon. Every day is different and you meet some really interesting people. I particularly enjoy helping my clients achieve their goals and I feel privileged to have worked with some truly exceptional people and to be counted amongst their most trusted advisors.

spend the rest of the afternoon in back-to-back meetings.

18.00 p.m. I check “thewisemonkey.net” to see what the wind is doing. 18 knots westerly, perfect. I finish my work and head down to the beach whilst there is still some daylight. I clear my head skimming across the waves on my kite board.

20.00 p.m.

After dinner I’ll often retreat to my office to finish off the day’s odd-jobs, update my timesheet and check-off those last few items on my to do list.

10.30 p.m. Bed!

Question: What do you dislike most about being an Associate? Answer: The usual: office politics, performance targets and billing. I think lawyers are their own worst nightmares. We put ourselves under so much internal pressure to achieve success. The only things I dislike about being an Associate are the pressures I place upon myself!

Question: How did you become an Associate? Answer: I studied law by distance learning at Nottingham Trent University whilst working as a trust administrator. I vividly remember the day when all my law textbooks arrived. I didn’t think it would be possible to read that many books, but I did.

Following my academic studies, I completed the Legal Practice Course whilst undertaking a training contract at Nigel Harris & Partners, a local firm of English solicitors.

The day I qualified, I bought my first surfboard.

Question: What advice would you give someone, either just starting their career or midway through their career, who wants to be an Associate? Answer: To be a good lawyer you need to be one part academic, one part negotiator, and one part amateur psychologist. It’s a rewarding but demanding career choice but you will really enjoy the relationships you build along the way.
