no parents are given travelling assistance by Jersey Health Services. Siblings may be separated for long periods and become anxious, and then we can help them to visit.
Assistance with household bills could be provided because income may be seriously depleted by one parent having to give up work. In some cases assistance is available for rent payments to safeguard a home environment. Replacement of essential household machinery may be covered, recently after a call to case workers at 9.00 a.m. a washing machine was replaced the same evening as it was needed urgently.
Liaison occurs between partner charities, professionals on Robin Ward and paediatrician community nurses from Family Nursing and Home Care. Assistance with General Practitioners’ fees is available either for home visits or visits to the surgery.
Case workers contact and meet
family members to support them through this traumatic time as family members may be stressed and upset by the diagnosis, potentially affecting each one in different ways.
Fund raising is part of the Committee’s work, although as the charity and its ideals are well known, many sponsored activities not directly organised by the committee kindly identify with CLIC Sargent (Jersey) as the charity they want to support.
The Committee has had a variety of enjoyable events to both promote the profile of the charity and raise funds. These include some highly successful ‘curry nights’ with an Indian theme, for about 120 people held at the Jersey Rugby Club. A sponsored New Year’s Day swim is always a popular event at Rozel. Also close to Rozel a ‘Christmas Extravaganza’ sale is held at Chateau La Chaire Hotel. This normally occurs in late November and most, if not all items in the sale, are aimed at the Christmas market. At this event the whole
ground floor of the hotel is very kindly loaned to CLIC for the day, food is available and visiting choirs provide songs for all. The next of these events will be in November 2016.
An annual ‘Ladies Tennis Tournament’ is organised by Tess Watson of the Committee and held at the Caesarean Tennis Club. For the last two years CLIC Sargent (Jersey) has assisted at and has received part of the funds raised by the ‘Big Gig in the Park’ organised by Caroline Strachen. Participation at the Rotary Club’s Farm Open Day at La Ferme, Rozel raised funds for the charity as did Gorey Fete. Mention must also be made of the funds raised by Willy Nieuwburg with his now well know ‘Marc’s Walk’ in memory of his son.
Next year will see many of the events above repeated and some new ones to help in providing assistance to children and their families suffering from cancer. The charity have a ‘fund raising pack’ that can assist anyone considering holding a fund raising
event. The CLIC Sargent (Jersey) website (see below) will give full details of how to make contact with the Committee.
Committee members have said ‘we continue to be amazed at the generosity of Jersey people. ‘A top prize in a recently held event was returned to the Committee by the winner who asked that it be given to one of the families being helped. A case worker commented ‘how brilliant is that - it just shows how good people can be.’
Finally an important message - there may be families in Jersey that are unaware of CLIC Sargent (Jersey)’s position in being able to help with their situation. If you know of any families who have a child or young person suffering from cancer and need some help please get in touch either through the website or directly with the case workers through the numbers listed below.
