the town is the commercial heart of the Island, and the needs of business and retail – and especially our fantastic markets – are considered.
But there are tremendous opportunities and much for us to build upon. We want to work with retailers and business to ensure that St. Helier remains viable and vital, and that it is robust in the face of competition, whether that be from the internet or other places. Economic activity has to provide a firm foundation to sustainable regeneration. It is encouraging to see a healthy office market and for development to commence on the Esplanade Quarter to begin to deliver the Jersey International Finance Centre.
Fortunately, St. Helier’s ‘high street’ would
appear to be faring relatively better than others – with our retail voids running at about 3.5% compared with over 10% average in the UK - and it is encouraging to see and enjoy the success of more ‘event-led’ activity in town, through initiatives such as the Fête de St. Hélier and the Fête de Noué.
We want to explore the potential to make travel into and movement around St. Helier a better experience and are working to develop a comprehensive traffic management plan for the town that will deliver benefits for pedestrians, cyclists, bus users and motorists, which will be of ultimate benefit to retailers and business.
