charities – something a leading climate change campaigner and minister is supporting after seeing how an iVolt installation at Kent’s Chaucer Technology School is helping to bring the site savings of £1.5million over the next 20 years.


Part of the global Sollatek group and based near Heathrow, iVolt was launched in 2011 and has already won a number of top FM and environmental awards. Customers including supermarket, hotel and restaurant chains, railway stations, airports, schools and factories are choosing the system not only for its patented Intelligent Real Time (IRT) Energy Monitor and the data it can supply, but for its higher than average savings and fast payback time.


Chaucer is just one of its success stories. Chosen by pupils taking part in an engineering project, an iVolt was installed along with two bio mass boilers at the end of 2011. Together, these systems are saving the school more than £80,000 a year and reducing its carbon footprint by nearly 70%. The interest-free loan the students secured to pay for the installations is expected to be fully paid back within 3-4 years too.


This groundbreaking project has received national acclaim, led to contracts with multiple schools and, after visiting Chaucer with a team from iVolt, the Shadow Minister for Energy and Climate Change called for public bodies across the UK to be given access to the funding that would enable them to install iVolt’s technology too.


Baroness Worthington said: “Chaucer has slashed its emissions and energy bills thanks to the iVolt and the biomass boilers and everyone is quite rightly delighted with the results. I found what the students have done fascinating and inspiring and Kent County Council has gone from not believing that it was possible to now seeing the project as an exemplar that they would like to follow in 21 other sites. This school should and must be used as an example to others.”


In many cases where an iVolt has been installed, it has brought about an element of behavioral change as the IRT device monitors energy use and so can pinpoint the busy periods.

electricity consumption in the UK rose by 2.6% in the first quarter of 2013, and the demand for power is only going to grow. Energy regulator Ofgem has already warned of the increased risk of power cuts because of limited energy supplies, and so either more power needs to be produced, or less power needs to be consumed. The benefits of VO are much greater than saving individual businesses money and CO2e: our research suggests that if the UK’s non-domestic properties adopted iVolt’s technology, we could save 20-21TWh per year.


With rising electricity prices, increasing demand and growing pressure to cut carbon emissions, reducing energy consumption must stay high on everyone’s agenda – not just schools’ and universities’. It has been estimated that some 400,000 British businesses could benefit from voltage optimisation.
