Technology comes TO THE AID OF THE MODERN GOLFER. By Sebastien Jost, Head of Teaching, The Royal Jersey Golf Club.

When used in conjunction with tried and tested traditional techniques, professional golf coaches can now elevate their teaching to another level.

Golfers today need to upgrade their clubs on a fairly regular basis to keep up with the latest innovations but choosing the correct clubs can be tricky. However modern technology can now help when a golfer goes in for a ‘fitting’ for their new clubs.

Gone are the days when a golfer went to the Proshop and picked out a set of clubs based on price, sales pitch and looks. Using technology which has previously only been available to touring professionals, a golfer can now use radar to measure accurately the distance of the shots, the height, the spin, the dispersion and a lot more. The technology can measure and therefore compare every club and all but guarantees the right choice.

at 90 mph at impact, we're only really guessing at what's happening without the use of accurate radars.

Video Analysis: “A picture is worth a thousand words” We all learn things different ways, but the visual side is very important. Being able to assess what a golfer feels that they are doing and what they actually do is crucial when making changes to their swing.

The use of slow motion, drawing lines, circles, angles, comparing with the best players and many more options allows the student to visualize what they need to do. Video analysis provides

instant feedback and so it's easier to

compare before and after.

Of course, golf requires a certain ‘feel’ and no

technology can

teach this. Proving what happens is also not the complete answer as

knowledge cannot be replaced by

technology. So it has to be a combination of the two.

Modern

Improving a golfer’s swing: The Pro used to stand back and have a look at a few shots, and tell you what should be done to improve a golfer's swing. That's still the case, but modern technologies give the Pro confidence to work on a point, which will also be more obvious for the student. Most importantly it will give both the Pro and the student instant feedback and a measurable target. As a golf club might travel

and extremely accurate, but it's the human relationship between the Pro and the student through communication, psychology and instinct which will lead to improvement. This relationship without the use of modern tools might just take longer to produce results.
