and have a staff meeting ‘off- site’ annually to discuss the strategy, business plan and get all the staff together in a convivial environment. This is important to me because we operate from two sites but under one brand. Let’s not forget that Centrepoint also works with many other

agencies and charities in the Island (Grand Vaux Family Centre, The Childrens Service, NSPCC, After Breast Cancer, Jersey Childcare Trust, Families in Crisis, The Bridge, States of Jersey, Return to Work team).

set up. The Board is also required to have specific skill sets (Selflessness, Integrity, Objectivity, Accountability, Openness, Honesty, and Leadership). Remember that our board is a collection of individuals each with their own style which is always put to good use in one way or another. Over the years I have seen Peacemaker, Challenger, History Holder, Compliance king, Passionate advocate, Data champion, Wise counsellor, Inspiring leader, Fixer, Risk taker, Strategist, and User champion. I try to encompass all of these, because its important for me to have a holistic view of the running of the charity and understand all the “pain points” that are occuring in the day to day environment and working with Jane to solve these. The responsibility of all

these young people weighs heavily with me as that is where the buck stops!

Since I have been Chairman, Centrepoint has grown. When I started four years ago we employed about 50 staff and now we are at 67. We also have more children on our register and we are regularly ‘full up’ across our Nurseries and Playcare locations which have a turnover of around £1.5m annually. This cements my belief in our talented and dedicated staff, our focus on the children and our strategy, which is to be the best nursery and playcare provider in Jersey.

My visibility in the oganisation is important to me, and I try and get around the sites as work permits. It’s always good to talk to the staff, as well as the parents and the children. We try

During my tenure there have been many ‘highs’ and ‘lows’ for me personally. One such high spot was writing about our CEO Jane Moy , for the Institute of Directors Non- Profit Director of the Year award 2013, which I was very pleased she won. Other

‘highs’ were seeing our fleet of liveried mini-buses

travelling around the Island picking up and dropping off the kids from school. I am also proud to read the comments written by the parents at our regular open evenings, and equally proud of the huge

success of our very own Jersey Kids got Talent show which just gets bigger and bigger each year! My own low period was in late 2013 when I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, and during my treatment would often pop up to La

Pouquelaye for catch ups with Jane and the staff, who always made me feel welcome and at ease despite me being very self- conscious.

Commercially we have struggled and (with no States funding) Centrepoint ran at a loss for many years, It’s pleasing that we have now turned a corner and have some financial reserves and a fully staffed finance team. We are working on a number of initiatives to save money and get our reserves to the right level for an organisation of our size. We are in a very different place financially to where we were 5- 10 years ago and I am resolute in my belief that over the years the Board and I have made the right decisions for the good and benefit of the charity. Long may that continue.

As I look to the future for Centrepoint I am mindful that no organisation should stand still and become complacent. We should always be striving to do better and instill a culture of innovation and creativity in all the staff. It’s very important to me that we are all engaged in and driving the same strategy, but that we have the spirit of the charity as our focus all the time. I would like us to look at other sites in Jersey, possibly Guernsey as well. There is clearly a demand for our services but we are also very cognisant that there are many other providers out there, and parents do have a choice when looking at nurseries and play- care solutions for their children.
