they are travelling much further and faster than they actually are, resulting in an adrenaline filled ride but without the risks of nausea and extreme pressures on the body”.
The total experience “It’s not just an adrenaline rush, but also a discovery full of surprise elements,” adds Kleve. “It’s the total experience!” As with the immersive tunnel supplied last year by

combined with the pre and post-show elements, the Forbidden Caves offers a total experience of around 12 minutes, entertaining around 750 guests per hour. “Experiences that grab your full attention, engaging all
your senses creating excitement levels that are no longer just the preserve of outdoor rollercoasters,” notes Stuart Hetherington, CEO of Holovis. “A key element of our brief from Bobbejaanland was ensuring that the operational aspects of the ride were suitable for a family attraction, accommodating riders from ages eight to 80. The experience features highly organic motion which when synched with the visuals creates the illusion that people feel

plus stunts, water effects, pyrotechnics and theatrical lighting. Each of the marine shows, meanwhile, features its own themed arena. “One of the great strengths of the Chimelong Group is their amazing theming department,” notes Marks. “We saw teams of
workers out there every day putting intricate details on areas of the park that most people wouldn’t even take a second look at. The “wooden” ship in the lagoon is a great example of this. The whole thing is made entirely out of concrete, but even close up looks like well-aged wood with all the appropriate grain and knots.” “During the soft opening week of Ocean Kingdom, we got to see the reaction of an audience to one of the marine mammal
shows,” concludes Chambers. “The show was still very early in terms of rehearsal time that the animals had in their new environment, so the trainers kept the programme very simple and low stres, however on the very first show, there were close to 5,000 people packed into this brand new, state-of-the-art stadium, standing room only. They absolutely loved it! Every action, no matter how big or small, got huge applause. The Chinese market certainly seem to be on a major upswing its quest for entertainment, and we are proud to have played our part.”

Simworx to Movie Park Germany, the project lead time for The Forbidden Caves was very short, but even more so. “It was delivered from concept to opening in just seven months,” reveals Hetherington, “one of the fastest delivery timescales for this type of e-ticket attraction ever achieved. Holovis took total responsibility for providing a turnkey solution for the whole ride, working closely with the Bobbejaanland team and project managing the other contractors including the theming and lighting providers and show control integration. All on time and on budget.” Belgium’s first immersive tunnel is also the world’s first to
feature an electric rather than hydraulic drive. This has the benefit for the operator of doing away with hazardous chemicals, increasing operational efficiency and reducing maintenance. The sharp 12,000 x 10,500 resolution display inside the ride building uses seven F35 units from projectiondesign (Barco), with images seamlessly blended using Holovis’ auto alignment software. Spatial audio further enhances the experience, with a 12.2 stereo sub and six on-board speakers transmitting realistic radio communications. Effects including the scent of a musty cave and air moving fans add to the illusion of the riders quickly travelling through a dangerous environment.
Adventure
Valley With the arrival of The Forbidden Caves, Bobbejaanland has been able to create a new themed area, its second after Cowboy Town (other areas of the park feature no unified theming). Adventure Valley takes in existing attractions including King Kong (by Huss Park Attractions) Banana Battle (indoor Splash Battle) and Revolution (indoor Vekoma coaster) in addition to a new catering point, Coffee Cave and Jasper’s Supply Depot, a new souvenir shop.
