Shrek’s
Adventure Merlin’s new Midway
format Merlin Entertainments’ latest “Midway” (short stay”) attraction format will be unveiled on July 1 in London when it teams up with DreamWorks to launch the world’s first Shrek’s Adventure! outlet at County Hall, alongside its existing London Eye, London Dungeon and London Sea Life attractions.
The immersive walk-and-ride-through indoor facility (other Shrek attractions
can be found in various outdoor theme parks around the world) will bring to life the hilarious world of Shrek and friends from the popular animated movie franchise.
Guests are invited to take a fantastical trip to the Kingdom of Far Far Away, beginning on board a 4D flying bus ride featuring new 3D animation from DreamWorks. With Donkey at the wheel, passengers will soar above the London skyline with their favourite DreamWorks characters whizzing by. But things soon go off course and when the tour bus crashes guests must embark on a quest to find Shrek and return safely home. Replicas of famous Far Far Away locations including Shrek’s Swampy home, The Poison Apple Pub and The Muffin Man’s House will be waiting for visitors, together with a mirror maze, a “swirling magic portal,” and game show with hidden surprises. At the end of the tour in the ‘Arrivals Hall’, there are themed sets and photo opportunities with other DreamWorks favourites including the characters from Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon.

Here’s the original Hogwarts Express!
Universal Orlando isn’t the only place visitors can see a Hogwarts Express attraction you know. The Making of Harry Potter at Warner Bros Studio Tour London, which features many of the original film sets, now features a new area including the rather famous train. Unlike the Universal attraction, it cannot be ridden and does not feature the
elaborate accompanying multimedia show, but Potter fans will be excited by the fact that this is the original steam engine used in the films, not a tramway in disguise. The antique British train, no. 5972, was built in 1937 and originally called Olton Hall. It appears together with a recreation of the Platform 9 ¾ set from the Harry Potter films. Visitord have the opportunity to climb aboard and pose with a luggage trolley as it disappears through the platform wall. The experience was created by the Thinkwell Group from California, which
played a large part in creating the rest of The Making of Harry Potter, which opened in 2012. Featuring dozens of sets and hundreds of authentic costumes and props, it showcases the exceptional creativity and craftsmanship that brought the fantasy films to life. Guests tour the facility with an award- winning handheld digital guide, which features over 100 minutes of original media contents from the Harry Potter cast and crew.
immerses Asia
The specialist UK supplier of media-based simulation attractions, Simworx has announced that it is to supply Malaysia’s first Immersive Tunnel, and indeed the company’s first such installation in Asia (a second is on order for an FEC in Wei Hei, China). Completion in Malaysia is due this coming
November/December at Panorama Langkawi, a rural visitor attraction in the state of Kedah which currently offers a varied range of experiences including the SkyCab cable car ride to the top of the magnificent Machincang mountain, the SkyBridge, SkyTrail and SkyAdventure park. The Immersive Tunnel will feature a 30-seat tracked
tram and a brand new ride film, Dinosaur Island. This dynamic, totally immersive experience will be suitable for all ages as passengers take their seats on a jeep- styled simulator ride vehicle, which after a short journey along a track into the main show area takes them on an all-action adventure. The tram unit sits on a highly dynamic, 3-DOF (degrees of freedom) motion base and with physical platform drops,
King Kong comes to Orlando
Following the success of an earlier King Kong attraction at its sister park in Hollywood, Universal Studios Florida is to open a media-based ride experience called Skull Island: Reign of Kong, opening summer 2016.
Guests will be transported deep into a wild and mysterious world, where their mission is to discover creatures of unknown origin, but where they are soon fighting for

their own survival. Their journey will take them through an ancient temple inhabited by hostile natives, a perilous jungle ruled by prehistoric creatures, a foreboding underworld of caves concealing unspeakable terrors, and face-to-face with the colossal Kong himself. Universal Creative is working closely with
Peter Jackson, director of the 2005 movie version of King Kong, to create the attraction.
dynamic lighting, sound and 3D film projection surround the vehicle front and from both sides. It’s not called immersive for nothing! “We have enjoyed great success with the
Immersive Tunnel since introducing it around 18 months ago and this latest example will be a superb addition to the attractions and facilities on offer at Panorama Langkawi.” notes Simworx business development manager Edward Pawley. “Along with all the accompanying effects, it will create a fun, immersive experience that will appeal to a very wide age group, from youngsters to adults.” As well as the 30-seat version going to Malaysia, multiple ride vehicles can be combined to create Immersive Tunnels with 60, 90 or 120 seat capacity. Custom films can be produced on request. From 4D cinemas to more advanced attractions such as this, Simworx is flexible in the experiences it can deliver. If it includes media or a motion base they’ll do it!
