Hing Kong-based Cathay Pacific has re-vamped its First cabin, employing the same architects who designed its hub’s premium lounge in The Wing. Foster + Partners have bought elements of the lounge’s design into the First cabin by adding a glossy dark grey textured material on the outer surface of the suite and warm-tone natural leather on interior surfaces. The new side console and suite interior are wrapped in natural leather, with subtle linings, refined stitching and fewer panels for a more clean look. Seat fabric is custom- made with a specially-selected combination of materials that are soft and smooth. The cabin will also host individual artworks by Maria Lobo and Linda Leviton, made of copper and individually etched and painted by hand, with a harmonious colour palette. Cathay Pacific responded to feedback from its Marco Polo Club and included a more adjustable meal table, more room in the personal closet and additional space inside the console compartment. A drink holder is introduced on the new side console top. 500 thread count cotton fabrics have been used for the duvets, pillows, cushions and mattress. The thickness of the mattress has been increased and a new sleep suit, made with 100% organic cotton and designed by premium Hong Kong brand 'PYE', is offered. The first aircraft with the upgraded First is due to enter service on 26 July 2013 and the entire fleet of Boeing 777-300ERs will be completed by the third quarter of 2014. cathaypacific.com

Virgin by Vivienne Westwood revealed

Virgin Atlantic gave customers a sneak preview of its new Vivienne Westwood- designed uniforms.

Over 180 staff including Virgin Atlantic crew, pilots, ground staff, Clubhouse employees and Virgin Holidays staff will trial the uniform for a number of months. It will be assessed on fit, comfort, breathability, ease of movement, creasing, look and feel after laundering and how it handles stains, before the designs and fabrics are finalised and sent to the manufacturer. The full launch will be in 2014. Virgin Atlantic announced the partnership with the leading British designer earlier this year, citing original design and sustainability as key factors for the collaboration. The team used fabrics with cutting-edge nano-technology which repels stains and enables clothing to retain its colour and finish for longer. Items were created with ‘closed loop recycling’ in mind (a new technology which takes worn polyester clothing and turns it back into fresh fibres for new fabric. Recycled polyester yarn made from used plastic bottles was also incorporated. The uniform also had to be suitable for hot and cold climates and keep to rigorous rules: all ties and scarfs had to be quick release, male lace-up shoes needed to be able to slip off in the event of evacuation and all shoes are required to have a non-slip sole. Luke Miles, head of design at Virgin Atlantic said: “It’s a challenging design brief but we're confident the Vivienne Westwood uniforms will turn heads in the airport and the sky." virgin-atlantic.com
