Philippine Airlines (PAL) has now added inflight mobile as well as wifi connectivity as the first airline customer of the new TriaGnoSys’ inflight GSMConneX connectivity hardware. The airline has worked with
Mobile OnAir to retrofit the inflight connectivity first on its Boeing 777-300ER jets and progressively onto all its Airbus A330-343 aircraft so passengers can now make onboard mobile phone calls and get a wifi connection during flight. GSMConneX was originally
intended to power inflight GSM and TriaGnoSys has now
expanded it to include wifi. It incorporates the hardware and software parts for both the aircraft and ground segments. The airborne hardware consists
of two lightweight and small units, combined with wireless access points and a cabin control screen. TriaGnoSys is responsible for supplying GSMConneX itself, as well as integrating the other third party hardware elements into the full turnkey solution. As well as connectivity, the GSMConneX platform has been designed specifically to host a wide range of software application modules. These
include entertainment and non- flight-critical cockpit applications. Ian Dawkins, ceo of OnAir, said,
“The beauty of GSMConneX is that it is very simple to install and TriaGnoSys is highly flexible and easy to work with. That is very attractive for airlines, which want to provide inflight connectivity for their passengers in the most straightforward way possible. The ability to offer both GSM and wifi services is very important: passengers want to be able to choose how they communicate during the flight, just as they can on the ground.”

passengers on long-haul flights the chance to enjoy its full inflight entertainment offer as soon as they are in their seat. The new initiative means that passengers will now benefit from an additional hour of inflight entertainment, on average, by being able to enjoy it during preparation, take-off, landing and taxi-ing phases. The service is currently available on 19 long-haul aircraft, including the entire Airbus A380 fleet and selected Boeing 777-300 and 747- 400s, with a view to rolling it out across the entire long-haul fleet. In all cabin classes, Air France passengers have access to approximately 600 hours of programmes, including 85 to 100 full-length movies and 3,000 songs on around 300 CDs.

Lufthansa eyes the Chinese market
Lufthansa Systems is targeting the Chinese market with its wireless in-flight entertainment system BoardConnect. The company showcased the product at the sixth China Inflight Entertainment & Communications Summit in Shanghai and Olivier
Krueger, svp Lufthansa Systems, said: “China is a very promising market for us, not only because of the strong growth, but because airlines and their customers are very receptive to innovative technologies.”
Unlike many onboard systems, BoardConnect does not require any complicated wiring for each seat. It works with a regular WLAN based on the established
wifi standard and needs only a few access points in the cabin to deliver a broad variety of content to every passenger. The product has already
attracted interest from Chinese carriers. Using their laptops, tablets PC or smartphones passengers are able to access on-demand audio and video as well as information about their destination.
