4. FROM MT. VERNON TO OUTER SPACE George Washington lived the life of an 18th-century Virginia gentleman farmer at his Mount Vernon estate before and after serving as the first U.S. president. On today’s visit, you’ll go inside his family home and learn the story of his life and accomplishments. Afterward, a drive brings you to Washington, DC, to visit the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Here you can peruse the largest collection of historic aircraft and spacecraft in the world, with hundreds of artifacts like engines, rockets and spacesuits, plus the Wright brothers’ original 1903 Flyer. You’ll learn about the “race to space,” the art of jet planes, how helicopters are able to fly, and much more. Meals BLD


5. CIVIL WAR & ARCHIVE TREASURES At the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum, you’ll meet an expert who tells the story of the African Americans who served in the war, contributing significantly to their own eventual freedom, and discover the story of a real soldier who lived through the time, using the museum’s vast online resources. You’ll see the Spirit of Freedom sculpture, inscribed with the names of over 200,000 individuals who served in African American units during the Civil War, and visit the Martin Luther King Memorial. Afterward, a guided city tour provides views of the White House, Capitol, National Mall and the Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln monuments. Next up is an opportunity to learn about the Founding Documents of the U.S. from an insider at the National Archives, followed by a treasure hunt in the Public Vaults. 6. POTOMAC FUN & A SPY’S LIFE Get a different perspective on Washington, DC as you travel along the waters of the Potomac River by kayak* or canoe,* or bicycle* along a paved trail that includes views of Georgetown. The afternoon is yours to spend as you wish before a special experience at the International Spy Museum, where you’ll learn what it feels like to be a spy.
