6. GAME VIEWING INSIDE AN AGE-OLD CRATER Hop aboard a safari vehicle for a game drive and lunch in the famed Ngorongoro Crater, part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The crater is the largest intact, unflooded caldera in the world – calderas are basins that formed after the collapse or explosion of the center of a volcano – and today it is home to the greatest concentration of wildlife in the whole of Africa, including the big
7. OLDUPAI GORGE & THE SERENGETI En route to the Serengeti, stop at Oldupai Gorge (known for years as Olduvai Gorge), one of the world’s most extraordinary places and a place where the earliest known man walked upright some 3.6 million years ago. See how people live here today when you visit a Maasai boma – a nomadic village of small huts made of mud and cow dung for sleeping and cooking. The boma is traditionally surrounded by a circular fence of thorny bushes to protect the tribe and their cattle from predators. Can you picture living here with your family? Get a change of perspective about local life during a visit to the Oldupai Museum, founded by famous archaeologist Mary Leakey in 1979 to house paleoanthropological artifacts and fossils that were unearthed in the surrounding area. This afternoon we’ll embark on an awe-inspiring game drive in Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its annual migration of wildebeest, zebra and gazelles. Your safari lodge is ideally located on one of the main corridors of the migration route in the epicenter of the park. Meals BLD
