he Knorr-Bremse theme at Railtex on stand E51, is innovation and technology which drives safety,


enhances performance and reliability and at the same time optimises energy use and environmental impact whilst reducing life cycle costs. With two facilities in the UK located in Melksham, Wiltshire and at Burton-upon- Trent in Staffordshire, Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems is a one of the major systems suppliers and service providers to the UK and Ireland rail industry. These two UK- based Knorr-Bremse facilities combine to deliver systems solutions, products, parts and service and customer support. The Melksham facility, opened in 2005,


has over 300 employees who are involved in research and development, design and engineering, manufacturing and customer service and support for customers - the latter operated under the Knorr-Bremse Group’s Railservices banner. The Burton location, opened in 2011


with 40 staff is the specialist heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) facility of Knorr-Bremse for customers in the UK and Ireland. It is the source for Knorr-Bremse HVAC brands Merak and Sigma HVAC systems.


Innovative technology on show The Knorr-Bremse stand will be dominated by a huge screen running a film made especially for Railtex which will demonstrate the range of systems and services available from Knorr-Bremse in the UK. The range of brake control systems shown at Railtex will include the new EP1001 Wheel Slide Protection system which has been especially designed and developed in the UK for freight applications. This system can be fitted to new build


wagons and in most cases, thanks to the system’s ability to generate its own power, simply retro-fitted to existing wagons. The system provides a solution to the potentially dangerous, disruptive and expensive problem of wheel ‘flats’ which can occur during braking. This problem, which can be caused, for example, by poor wheel/rail adhesion conditions or

due to an incorrect load weigh signal, resulting in over-braking, can mean a loss of operational service, rail damage and the expense of over-frequent wheel turning. The latest generation and enhanced


version of the well-proven Knorr-Bremse EP2002 Distributed Brake Control system will also be on show. This system has been successful around the world on metro trains, especially in China where it has become almost the ‘standard’ metro brake control system. In the Middle East it is used on the longest fully automated metro in the world in Dubai. The mechatronic Knorr-Bremse


EP2002 system delivers Distributed Brake Control (DBC) across the entire train by self-compensating in real time. Valves situated through the train are in constant communication, effectively ‘talking’ to each other so that at any given second they can combine to deliver the optimum in ‘whole’ train braking effort. Therefore if one carriage is full and another empty the forces applied to the brakes on that carriage are adjusted so that the entire train’s braking performance is optimised. This provides safer and more accurate

performance than conventional ‘uniform’ braking systems, reports Knorr-Bremse. The new version of EP2002 on display at Railtex features a direct ethernet connectivity facility as well as new Brakes Explorer Software which facilitates access to the status of each EP2002 unit and provides read out data on a laptop with clear and easy to read graphics. Another development is the Z-300 monitoring system. This compact unit, mounted within the train, can monitor on- board systems including HVAC and door operational status. It can facilitate remote adjustment and pre-emptive maintenance to keep systems functioning properly for passenger comfort and to keep trains operating. Within the technology section of the


stand will be the Knorr-Bremse oil-free compressor. This product is proven in uses worldwide, and as its name suggests uses no oil for lubrication. Specially developed coating negates the need for oil lubrication and in addition to the positive environmental and economic benefits of there being no used oil, filters or condensates to dispose of the oil free
