The polymer straws are tightly packed into a housing, similar to other desiccant dryers, but as they are more uniformly shaped than beads, they are unaffected by the vibration of the rolling stock, says Norgren. This means there is a consistent air flow through the tubes (reduced drop in pressure) and performance does not degrade over time. As there is no clay component, there is also no dust. During manufacturing, the AMT polymer tubes go through a water bath as part of the extrusion process. This has significant benefits: if the tube becomes saturated, there is no by-product or chemical reaction. The tubes are simply dried, returned to their original state and reused, which makes purging the system quick and simple and reduces maintenance.


Lightweight and flexible The compact AMT air dryer is lightweight and flexible as it can be installed in either a horizontal or vertical position. In tests, the AMT dryer collects more grams of moisture than a traditional dryer, and is able to fill up the reservoirs more quickly, making it much more energy efficient. The air dryer has a life span of up to 18,000 hours, the equivalent to six years in most applications, which changes the status of the air dryer from a serviced item to a major refurbishment item. The AMT dries the air better to ensure a reliable flow of clean air from the compressor, keeping the railway network moving.

Multi-stage filtration systems have been designed to ensure optimal air condition and increased reliability to protect downstream applications such as braking equipment, pantographs and automatic doors. Capable of removing oil and particles to the levels required by ISO8573-1, these systems also contain high-temperature filters to remove hot particles of carbon and oil. They are suitable for use between -40°C and +80°C and are simple to install and maintain. One of Norgren’s innovations in door


control systems is a reduced force cylinder for external and internal door control. The cylinder has been developed to meet the needs of purchasers who are finding it hard to source and service OE products. Already these products have been specified in the UK by major train companies and suburban network operators. At Railtex, Norgren will be asking visitors to set a challenge to its specialist engineering team who will be running live ideation sessions on the stand. Customers can put their challenges to Norgren, either in advance or during the event, to generate ideas and propose solutions.
