funding opportunities. Recognising the potential contribution
that the academic community can make, RSSB and Network Rail co-fund the Rail Research UK Association (RRUKA) as a bridge between industry and universities. It brings together those who do research with those who can use and support it. As you will read in the feature on page 166, RRUKA is a member of TSLG, which provides further opportunities to work together to deliver on the long-term vision. Rail has also developed a partnership
with the Technology Strategy Board, which provides opportunities in funding competitions, as well as the plan to set up new initiatives to support rail's contribution
Another challenge is to cultivate
innovation. TSLG has now formed a dedicated Enabling Innovation Team (EIT) - hosted by RSSB - with anticipated funding of £52 million in CP5. Network Rail has identified the potential for further funding of £300 million in the area of research development and innovation over the same period. EIT’s mission is to offer support to practical cross-industry demonstrator projects, taking concepts through to trials, but also seeking out innovative ideas and proposals from across the industry and elsewhere. Again, the principle is the same: industry poses the question, research activity supports the industry by helping to provide the answers.
Joining forces and sharing knowledge The rail industry is equally intent on forging the right partnerships as one of the keys to securing value-for-money research and making the most of others’ expertise and experience. These lead to combined knowledge, access to new markets and
to the bigger transport system. Likewise, work with the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) is designed to combine specific experience in the road and rail sectors.
RSSB's partnership with the UIC has
helped foster an international network of contacts and knowledge in SPARK, a free, interactive web tool for the worldwide rail industry to share and find key information and help drive innovation. At its heart is a library where users can contribute their knowledge and find something new, drawing on the combined wisdom from railway administrations and centres of excellence across the globe. Research, development and innovation
have certainly moved up the agenda in recent times, attracting more investment and interest. The result is a comprehensive range of options for industry, individual companies and suppliers to engage with, to develop ideas and to commission work. Anson Jack is the deputy chief executive of RSSB
