challenge. As the East stair shaft is between two live tracks, some of the work has had to be undertaken using night time working in order to minimise passenger disruption. In some cases the rigs have been working less than a metre from the running rails. For safety reasons it was imperative that this was undertaken while the trains were not running.


The permanent works, commencing


shortly, have been designed by Whitechapel station designer, Hyder Consulting. The concourse piling programme is being carried out in two phases. BBGE contracts engineer, Brijes


Patel explains: ‘There are 102 piles on the project, all of which are between 300 mm and 450 mm diameter, ranging from six to 22 metres in depth. These piles are installed for several lift pits placed around the site, three RC portals that support the archway from the new East stair access, supporting the new canopy that will be constructed on the platform and the construction of a temporary entrance to the station, which will later become a secondary means of escape. In addition, temporary piles for three tower crane bases will be installed, which once in place will service the project.


‘The works have been split into two phases - during phase one, work will be on a disused road located between the eastbound and westbound London Underground Hammersmith, City and District Line service, installing various permanent piles as well as the tower crane piles.


‘Phase 2 will consist of working


on the London Overground / London Underground platforms, where one of the newly constructed tower cranes will be used to lift piling equipment on to the platform to commence work on the canopy supporting piles,’ says Patel.


Working in partnership Regular twice weekly planning meetings enable any problems to be identified early, before they could impact on the programme, and BBMV’s close working relationship with Crossrail ensures swift action can be taken when it is required. Brijes Patel concludes: ‘Whitechapel is a station where the Underground lines are actually above the Overground lines.
