ublic performance measures numbers have been dropping over the last few years but train operators are still


increasingly looking for ways to improve availability of rolling stock: real time data collection can help this process.


New trains may have this capability but what of their predecessors? Diamond Point International has over 2000 embedded computer systems installed in high speed trains, light metro and underground trains worldwide. It is increasingly being asked to help train operators update communications to existing last generation on board data acquisition systems. By retrofitting low-cost data collecting


bridge computers, DPI is able to offer train operators the opportunity to get real time data while trains are in service. This improves the quality of maintenance services by allowing operators to spot any developing faults and plan repair work before the fault develops into something more significant.


How does it work? DPI embedded computers can be designed to connect into existing systems, supporting various serial links. Existing data acquisition systems can also be enhanced with additional data collecting channels. DPI’s embedded bridging computers can then act as the bridge between on-board systems and train operators, ground-based networks, either sending data immediately via 3G modems or storing and sending via wi fi hot zones strategically placed alongside the track.


Space and power Where space is at a premium, DPI can produce systems to fit into the space available, either rack mount, roof space or under-seating. Individual train manufacturers use a range of different power voltages. DPI caters for this with a range of different power supplies.


Environmental requirements Operators and manufacturers like to specify the exact connectors to be used to interface into existing systems. DPI is aware of the types normally favoured and accommodates most connector interface needs. Environmental requirements vary enormously depending on where the equipment is expected to be used. DPI has experience installing inside the train, under the train, in control rooms or trackside. Fan-based air cooled systems can be


unreliable in an industrial environment where air filters block due to infrequent

cleaning. DPI uses techniques similar to those used in military computers to cool its products. This is referred to as conduction cooling, where an aluminium heat spreader is physically bonded to the high power components within the system and then bonded to the systems enclosure. Standard rotating hard drives can also be


another contributor to unreliability. While integrating to the existing systems DPI upgrades original storage systems to latest industrial grade solid state drives. DPI has access to a wide range of processor modules enabling exact matching to any application. Systems currently in the field are collecting data from engine management systems, motor efficiency, braking systems, axle and wheel bearing wear. Sensors and video feeds can also provide information on track condition. Data can be time stamped and GPS receivers and RFID transceivers and tags provide location. Accelerometers can provide feedback on track deterioration and ride quality. By changing to a real time data collecting model, preventative maintenance becomes


more achievable says Diamond Point. Parameters can be set for specific trigger points giving maintenance managers prior warning of developing issues. Providing latest technology for use on


older trains can help to extend the life of those vehicles.


Enhancing passenger experience Passenger experience can be enhanced with reliable mixed 3G, wi fi and repeater based systems giving consistent internet access to business class passengers. Passenger and staff security can be


improved with the use of on board video security systems linked to the 3G networks providing train operators with live video feeds. DPI has worked closely with London


Underground developing super-rugged under train computers to support on-train track inspection systems.
