he official launch at the iconic BT Tower included a series of short presentations outlining how the newest part of brand BT came about. Tony Chanmugam said: ‘The acquisition of BT Cables was done following the business model that the BT Group has. ‘The business model is very straight -

forward. The company looks at building up its internal business, getting it to a critical mass then taking that to the external market to capture market share. It is something that has been successfully done with BT Fleet. BT Fleet has a £200 million business providing fleet management across many market sectors. It is the fastest growing part of BT, and having built up the internal business, the company now has a product proposition that it has taken to the market and won some lucrative contracts over the course of this financial year.’ ‘I use the same business model for BT

Cables. BT Cables is in the business for the long-term and it wants to succeed.’

Who does BT Cables serve? So what makes up this new part of BT? Kevin Samuel, BT Cables commecial director says: ‘BT Cables is a wholly owned subsidiary of BT Group with manufacturing and commercial operations in the UK that supports and supplies a global client base. ‘It has a comprehensive cable and accessories product portfolio which enables it to effectively service many market sectors including telecommunications, utilities, infrastructure, buildings, industrial and rail. ‘There is a history of cable manufacturing

at its Manchester plant, with the factory being continuously operational for over 115 years. This longevity brings experience and expertise which has seen the operation evolve to what it is today – an industry respected cable manufacturer and supplier.’ The BT Cables business philosophy is

simple:

Understand customers’ needs Develop solutions to meet those needs Ensure delivery of first class quality products, on time, every time BT Cables’ services include: inventory management, cable cutting, distribution, drum management, cable recycling and waste management.

Network Rail approved For the future BT Cables will continue to invest in the development of its product range and services with a specific focus on the rail market. BT Cables currently holds Network Rail approvals for: Axle Counter (NR/L2/SIG/30060), Trackside telecoms (NR/PS/TEL/00015), SSI datalink (BR1932), Internal low smoke telecoms (CW1600) Jumper wires (CW1423NR).

‘BT Cables introduced its continuous

improvement philosophy under the Japanese Kaizen change for the better umbrella in 1998, and it is now an established way of life. Kaizen and the disciplined Six Sigma approach have become fundamental to BT Cables’ continued growth and success,’ says Samuel. ‘By putting these techniques at the heart of strategy, planning and operations, all areas of the business have seen improvements

in business efficiency, minimising waste, cost reduction, customer delivery and health and safety.’ BT Cables’ skill base in continuous

improvement techniques has been made available to its customers and suppliers. Customers have been able to ‘fast track’ the benefits of Kaizen within their own organisations. Kaizen is also employed throughout the extended supply chain. Today the facility provides services from beginning to end for cable from manufacturing, cut to length, next day delivery anywhere in the UK, drum management and recycling services

Environmental responsibility BT Cables is proud to have an Environmental Manifesto. The company is ISO 14001 certified and fully compliant with RoHS requirements. ‘BT Cables offers a full range of halogen free (HFFR) cables and has also achieved some notable environmental milestones including a reduction of three per cent in power consumption; the substitution of wooden battens by plastic wrapping (50 per cent); the redesign of wooden drums to reduce the wood consumption (15 per cent); collection of 70 per cent of drums to be re-used in the domestic market and, significantly there have been no environmental claims received for more than 10 years,’ says Samuel. BT Cables is working with the

Carbon Trust, Groundwork EBS and the Manufacturing Institute to calculate its carbon footprint and reduce its impact on
