Chez Moi on her way to winning the race to La Rochelle

the evacuation of troops from St. Malo during World War II.

At the start of July, the sun came out to welcome those who took part in an evening Parade of Sail in St. Aubin’s Bay to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club. Over the first wet and windy weekend 13 boats also set out on the challenging 17th Waller-Harris offshore 2-handed triangle race to Granville and then St. Cast. The Gorey Regatta also took place in strong winds in July, with a fantastic entry from many future yacht skippers in the dinghy classes.

The highlight of the year for St. Helier Yacht Club was the 350 mile Bi-Annual Offshore Race to La Rochelle which set off from Jersey on a beautiful Friday evening on 20th July. A good- sized fleet of over 20 boats enjoyed all of the challenges of this race, with Chez Moi skippered by Julian Barber, taking line honours three days later. Class 1 was won by Abracadabra and Class 2 by Knight Star. A great reception was held in La Rochelle, bringing a fitting end to this popular event.

August contained the British Airways Round Jersey race and a pursuit race to Chausey, as well as seeing Jersey successfully host the Brewin Dolphin British Hobie Cat National Championships in St. Aubin’s Bay.

At the start of September, the

Brewin Dolphin 14th Jersey Regatta, which is the biggest regatta on the local sailing calendar, attracted a record number of entries this year. They were blessed with ideal sailing conditions for three very close and competitive days of racing in St. Aubins Bay. This was closely followed by the St. Helier Yacht Club Autumn Series and on the final weekend an offshore race to Granville.

The most encouraging aspect of 2012 is seeing so many young sailors coming up through the ranks, many of whom have honed their skills through St. Catherine’s Sailing Club and are already sailing competitively in national and international events. This really bodes well for the future of sailing in Jersey. It is also good to see such renewed interest in the range of RYA Courses being run through the clubs, Highlands and Education, bringing increased safety to all those out on the water.

We are looking forward to an equally successful year in 2013, with increased participation in all of our events. Some of the highlights will be a race to Dartmouth in May, the Carey Olsen inter-Island race in June and the 15th Jersey Regatta in September, and we also hope to involve a wider number of boats, both sail and motor, by extending our programme of cruising weekends following the success of the two events we put on in 2012.
