slanders are lucky to have exposure to a variety of sports, many of them played to a very high standard. Basketball in particular is a sport which we see emerge at the forefront of the island’s sports arena. It’s growing in popularity in the Island community and gathering a dedicated following along the way

The opening of the new town park in October 2011 kicked off what proved to be an exciting season for basketball and gave

the Jersey Basketball

Association the opportunity to showcase the sport. JBBA members

welcomed the public to try out the new outdoor half-court, creating a lot of excitement

which was captured by the media. Local dignitaries played alongside people of all ages and the event helped to bring an influx of youngsters who are now actively involved in our junior development programme. These dedicated kids turn up regularly for training sessions and are the future stars of the Island teams and, who knows, perhaps even the national game.

The inter-insular matches are a big deal in Jersey for all sports, not only basketball. The rivalry between Jersey and Guernsey is fierce, instilling a sense of loyalty and sportsmanship amongst everyone who takes part. Having lost to Guernsey more times than we care to remember, 2012 nevertheless saw Jersey basketball triumph. Following years of coming a very close second, the Jersey Men’s team won, and both our junior Under- 17s and Under-21s teams went on to take outstanding victories over their Guernsey counterparts. Five of our juniors form part of the Men’s team and three played in the match on the day, proving

that the young talent we have is incredible and our development programme is doing the trick. Although the Island Ladies team missed out on a win, it was only by 16pts and it’s hoped in the future that the ladies’ development programme will produce similar results to the men. With the 2013 inter-insulars on the horizon, the success of the other teams is all the motivation the ladies need.

With the basketball season underway again, we can look forward to another exciting year. A newly appointed committee is focused on the development and promotion of basketball island- wide, and is committed to encouraging more kids to participate in what is a great team sport. Retaining the inter- insular title is also a huge focus, and although our teams are not taking part in the 2013 Island Games in Bermuda, plans are already in place for the 2015 Island games which is set to be the biggest sporting event ever hosted by the Island.
