In recent years ESC has supported the employment of Development Officers in several sports and these people have had a significant impact. They have increased the number of people participating and also helped improve standards of achievement. The sports involved have worked with ESC and found partners to jointly fund the Development Officers and I believe it is an excellent model that we must continue to develop in other areas.

For many years sport has benefited from generous corporate sponsorship which has enabled many to travel off -Island and also for events to be staged in Jersey which have attracted visiting participants. The States, through the Advisory Council for Sport and Leisure, also supports individuals and teams to travel away for competition. More recently, the One Foundation has provided financial support for individuals and teams and Economic Development has provided funding for the Jersey Rugby Club to promote the Island and encourage more visitors to Jersey for matches and to support their teams.

The States has invested in a Community Sport team who work with young people to reduce crime and increase community safety. This small team has successfully used sport to engage with young people and reduce anti-social behaviour. It is part

of a multi-agency approach that has made a real contribution to reducing crime and anti social behaviour among young people over a number of years.

Sport has a positive impact on physical fitness and health. Schools, sports centres, clubs and associations all play a part in promoting healthy lifestyles and providing opportunities for participation. Also, more than 900 people a year benefit from the Exercise Referral scheme, another States initiative, which offers activity programmes to people who are referred by health professionals. The programmes are delivered by qualified staff and many participants continue healthy lifestyles after they have completed their course.

We already have strong foundations for a healthy sporting future in Jersey but to ensure we take the right track, I will be issuing a Green Paper for Sport soon. This will seek the views of Islanders and set out the facts and challenges faced by sport, including funding pressures. The responses to this consultation will be used to inform the new Strategy for Sport which I propose to issue in 2013. I am confident that we have some excellent practice and I am keen to work with people to ensure the future of sport is secure and that the States continues to support this vital area in partnership with other groups. I value sport and look forward to continued success in all areas.
