Monday 10.09.2012 65 File-based QC in software Harris By Dick Hobbs
The latest addition to the Harris QuiC family of quality control is QuiC Pro, which is to be sold on a licensed software-only basis. Users will be free to configure their own processing farm to run as many concurrent file-based quality checks as they need.
Wide-Angled Spot/Flood: Hive’s Wasp Plasma Par goes from spot to super wide flood
Swarming towards the Plasma light
Hive Lighting By David Fox
Four new Plasma production lights from Hive Lighting make their European debut at IBC: the portable Wasp Plasma Par; the Hornet Plasma Fresnel; the combinable, versatile dual-lamp Killer Plasma Maxi; and the Drone Ellipsoidal Retrofit Kit for upgrading an ETC Source Four to Plasma.
The daylight lamps use a single-point Plasma source that should last 10,000+ hours. “It’s a beautiful system […] you will not believe the power that comes from a globe that is literally twice the size of a grain of rice. It’s a continuous spectrum; so no nasty spikes of colour that try to fool the eye into the appearance of a natural light source. The light output per power consumption is unbelievable... and far more controllable than any LED sources I have seen,” said Gale Tattersall BSC, DoP on the recently ended hit drama, House. “The heat output is minimal, and all the electronics are built into the heads so you don’t have ballasts cluttering up the set floor...”
The “well-built 5600k single point light sources […] offer a beautiful broad spectrum quality,” added Gregory Josef Shummon, owner of Lux Studio, and Gaffer on the same show. “I think the entire line is great. However the unit that excites me the most is one called The Wasp […] a 400W HMI equivalent only drawing 280 total system Watts of power.” 11.C74
QuiC, which uses technology from content analysis specialist
Digimetrics, has traditionally been supplied on dedicated 1U hardware which both checks and, where necessary, repairs content, typically much faster than realtime. QuiC Pro provides only the analysis, reporting if necessary via the Invenio asset management system to
allow problematic content to be viewed, repaired or rejected.
Checks include evaluating content for flashing or flickering images which may trigger episodes of photo- sensitive epilepsy. Testing is to the highest international standards – the so-called Harding test, named for Professor Graham Harding who developed the criteria – and QuiC Pro can generate a PDF certificate to national regulatory requirements. “The increasing emphasis on file-based workflows creates a need for straightforward quality control processes,” said Harris Morris, president of Harris Broadcast. “These new tools provide fast, effective and actionable results without false positives, allowing our customers to
share, distribute and monetise assets across many workflows and delivery platforms.” 7.G20

‘Magical’ 500Mbps barrier broken Newtec
By Ian McMurray
Ushering in what the company claims is a new era of bandwidth efficiency, Newtec has announced that it has broken the ‘magical’ 0.5 Gbps two way throughput barrier over a 72MHz transponder on a Eutelsat satellite. Testing was performed at Eutelsat’s teleport in Rambouillet during the night in order not to disturb crucial daytime sport transmissions. A significant
margin was taken in cloud cover conditions to ensure the tests were relevant for real-life high availability services in broadcast and telecom markets. The tests were carried out in several steps to validate different market application scenarios. In the two-way high speed backbone tests, Newtec combined its Bandwidth Canceller and Next Generation modems (Newtec MDM6000 series) to achieve 506Mbps (2 x 253Mbps).
A number of elements were used to improve overall
current market available efficiencies, including Clean Channel Technology (a Newtec technology for implementing lowest roll-off and filtering to boost throughput). New modulation and Forward Error Correction (FEC) codes were also used, which can be seen as demonstrators for evolutions in extending the DVB-S2 standard. In particular, for this part of the test, a complete reworked 32 APSK 135/180 (135 over 180) modulation proved to be most optimised.

Timecode Systems By Monica Heck
Buddy can you spare me some time: The Timecode Buddy is showing
Timecode Systems is showing its all-in-one Timecode Buddy system to the show this year, which is designed to enhance the recording and syncing of SMPTE timecode. Described as the first solution to generate accurate timecode with the ability to sync to iOS devices over Wi- Fi, the products were developed to offer a different approach to timecode and to the throughput of metadata in film and television. Timecode Systems’
combination of new timecode
hardware products and free iOS digislate app allows productions to sync picture and sound across all recording formats. The addition of Wi-Fi connectivity allows broadcast professionals to stream sample accurate timecode over Wi-fFi to up to 10 iPhones or iPads, so everyone on set with one of those devices can wirelessly stream and display realtime SMPTE timecode directly from the Timecode Buddy to the iOS device. “The Timecode Buddy system gives sound recordists, mixers and camera operators a cost effective suite of products for their kit bags that can be
was achieved in a one-way distribution set-up over the 72MHz transponder using 64 APSK modulations and related codes, with significant margin on the Ku-band system. “This latest series of
records indicates that Newtec is leading the effort on contributing new technology in previously unimaginable real world applications,” said Serge Van Herck, CEO of Newtec. “The Newtec MDM6000 next generation modem is being released as soon as October and is applicable in a large scope of applications requiring high service availability.” 1.A49
used on every kind of shoot,” said Paul Scurrell, founder of Timecode Systems. “Whether they’re working with large format TV cameras, DSLRs or small handheld DV cams, there’s no longer any need to worry about compatibility or swapping kit between jobs.” Also being demonstrated on the Timecode stand is the new Timecode Sync plugin for the MovieSlate logging app. From creating accurate timecode stamps to logging sound notes, the collaboration between Timecode Buddy and MovieSlate allows any member of the production to wirelessly log and slate accurate ToD or Tape Run timecode significantly saving time and money in post production. 9.B20a
