80% browse while

watching TV

Brightcove By Ian McMurray

Cloud content services provider Brightcove is at IBC for the first time, and is showcasing the company’s App Cloud Dual-Screen Solution for Apple TV. The new solution is said to enable media publishers to develop

rich content apps for the iPhone and iPad that simultaneously control content, data and information presented on an HDTV while displaying synchronised content on the iPad or iPhone. The dual-screen solution leverages Apple’s AirPlay technology, which allows viewers to use applications that simultaneously present

content, interactive options and data on both the touch device and an Apple TV. With Brightcove’s new App Cloud Dual Screen Solution for Apple TV, media publishers can, says the company, capitalise on the growing consumer trend of using mobile devices while watching TV: a Nielsen survey into global trends for tablet and smartphone usage found that 80% of UK tablet users are browsing the web while watching TV, with 78% doing the same using smartphones. Brightcove says that its customers can now leverage this trend by offering their audiences a variety of enhanced viewing

experiences, including the ability to stream programs to an HDTV while enjoying relevant content on the app such as actor bios, past- season recaps, trivia, photos, and more. 5.C20

A design needs soul

The remote control remains central to consumers’ TV experience argues Ferdinand Maier, CEO, ruwido

Unnecessarily complicated and unwieldy remote controls are a thing of the past. At ruwido, we are transforming the way users engage with their television, and how they feel about their viewing experience. For us, design is soul. The combination of aesthetic designs, latest technology, and a clear, intuitive method of control and navigation will ensure that the remote control remains the foundation of how users interact with their televisions. Ruwido devices represent the natural evolution of the remote control; in a world where the

interactive element of television is ever increasing, our challenge is to create a way to navigate complex user interfaces in synchronisation with mind and senses, while retaining complete control functionality. Therefore our devices deliver true user experience excellence. The consumer receives an input device that reflects the premium brand, adding value by appealing to their emotions and that creates joy to use and joy to own.

Much has been made of the potential of voice control to revolutionise how we watch and

control access to our content; I would like to reiterate our belief that the remote control will remain central within the living room. As an interaction mechanism, voice control has undisputed potential, but without a physical counterpart, it lacks precision and the sense of complete control over the user’s content. With this in mind, voice control is, in fact, complimentary to a physical remote, not a conflicting technology.

I am looking forward to showing our innovative solution ‘r117’ that we have developed,

LED based Dual designed to give better quality light

Gekko Technology By David Fox

Gekko is launching a new colour tuneable version of its popular LED-based karesslite. Called the Dual, it will be available in wide and narrow formats, with output calibrated in 100K increments between 3200K and 5600K. The calibration process ensures a greater degree of accuracy at a given pre-set, as well as comparable accuracy from lamp to lamp.

At either end of its range the lamp doesn’t rely on a single colour LED to produce light, which means it can create a broader spectral output. It will be available on both the 85W 6006 and 6012 karesslites, and Gekko’s new, smaller- format karesslite, the 65W 2006. Measuring 30cm x

which combines the best elements of voice control with a straight forward design and functionality that ruwido remote controls embody. This hybrid solution, in combination with an innovative body utilising our interaction mechanism technology, will add a new dynamic, allowing users yet another option to ensure they enjoy the best possible experience within the comfort of their own home. The remote control is integral to enabling consumers to access and enjoy a far more diverse range of media, and our mission is to develop ever more intuitive technology that touches both the customer’s mind and the senses. Watching your favourite content on television after a long day is a pleasure; the way in which that content is accessed should be a joy too. 1.F68

15cm it will be available in single phosphor/single colour, colour tuneable (the Dual), and remote phosphor versions. Remote phosphor hasn’t really been seen in LED lighting before, although several companies are adding it to their ranges. The fixture uses high-power blue LEDs to excite the phosphors in an acrylic sheet, which “emits light in a very even way. It gives a much broader spectral output than a single phosphor creates,” explained Ian Muir, Gekko’s business development manager. Although there is a colour spike, this is much less than normal LEDs. “It is not as efficient as a single phosphor, but the quality of light is better,” he added. 11.E35
