New Carlo Salvi CS 005
Carlo Salvi introduces the new CS 005 model, single die, double-blow automatic cold header with quick tool change for the production of solid and semi-tubular rivets.
C
arlo Salvi manufactures heading machines for the production of screws, semi-tubular and fully tubular rivets, bolts, special fasteners and parts with very complex shapes starting from drawn wire in coils.
Its machines can be divided into three main families: • 1-die 2-blow headers. • 2-die 4-blow headers. • Progressive precision transfer headers.
Here we are looking specifically at single die double blow
headers, which Carlo Salvi has been manufacturing for more than 50 years. These machines are especially suitable for manufacturing screws, rivets and components where the upset volume does not exceed five (or in some cases six) times the wire diameter. Typical applications for these machines are the manufacture of:
• Machine screws. • Self-tapping screws. • Dry wall screws. • Welding studs. • Aerospace, solid, semi-tubular or fully tubular rivets. • Pins.
Carlo Salvi single-die, double-blow machines can be divided
in three sub-groups: • For manufacture of solid parts or screws blanks. • For production of parallel or tapered hole semi-tubular rivets as well as shouldered rivets.
• For the production of fully tubular or blind rivets. Carlo Salvi has the only 1-die 2-blow cold header available on
the market that can manufacture semi-tubular shouldered rivets and fully tubular rivets. Carlo Salvi machines are toggle driven. The toggle action
offers many advantages. In single-die, two-blow machines with one revolution of the crankshaft it is possible to complete one working cycle. Therefore, one revolution of the flywheel or crankshaft corresponds to one part produced. On competitors’ machines, the full manufacturing cycle requires two revolutions of the flywheel or crankshaft. The result is that crankshaft, connecting rod and related bronze bushings on a Carlo Salvi machine are subject to much less wear. Heading is carried out by means of progressive pressure,
very similar to hydraulic pressure, and not an instant impact as occurs on conventional headers. The toggle moves rapidly in the first part of the stroke and slows down dramatically at the end of the stroke, when the component is being upset. The time allowed for actual heading is much higher, resulting
in better tool life and a better molecular structure of the component. On single die headers, this is evident with recessed head screws, where punch life can be increased up to 30% compared to conventional headers. In single die headers, besides better tool life, the toggle has enabled the development of a very efficient, patented piercing

system, which has been applied to semi-tubular and fully tubular rivets manufacturing. In conventional headers the crankshaft is subject to maximum
load when in the maximum heading position. On Carlo Salvi toggle headers the maximum heading point is taken by the toggle and the crankshaft is at an almost idle position. The Carlo Salvi crankshaft is therefore subject to much less wear and heading flexion is minimised. Single-die, double-blow headers are manufactured in several
models able to handle wire from 0.8mm to 14mm diameter and capable of manufacturing very small through to large components. The latest Carlo Salvi models are from the CS- series: a new
range that can be considered real CNC cold heading machines. Distinctive features of these machines are:
• Touch-screen controls to set-up machine. • In-line on screen trouble shooting. • Computer controlled motorised adjustment of K.O. unit. • Computer controlled motorised adjustment of wire feed. • Product data saving and recall possibility for following productions. • Linear wire feed, with universal grippers for all wire diameters inside the machine range. This eliminates the need for rolls so tooling is less expensive and set up is quicker. It also means better cut-off quality with no wire deformation and absence of possible marking, even on softer materials.
• Tool set-up outside of machine while it is working by means of the quick change kit.
• The possibility to produce super alloys special parts by mean of an embedded induction heating kit.
Following on the CS 002 model, able to handle up to 5mm
diameter wire, and the CS 003 model, able to handle up to 7mm diameter wire, Carlo Salvi has now developed the CS 005 model, able to handle wire up to 14mm diameter (super-alloys up to 13 mm).
