NEWS Finally a British winner!
The UK saw a great weekend of sport. Swiss Roger Federer won the Men’s Singles Championship at Wimbledon… Australian Mark Webber won the Grand Prix at Silverstone… and PTS carried off the FIFA trophy at Perry Barr…
Hang on a minute! PTS won what at Perry Barr? The Fastener Industry Five A-side trophy – already being variously described as the Nuts and Bolts Cup or the Dodgy Tackle Trophy.
So how did that work? Really, really well – it was a great day.
What was? Ah. OK. Well earlier this year, in an Irish bar Cologne,
somebody – well Jason Collyer actually - had the bright idea to stage a five a side football competition open to teams from the staff of any company in the UK fastener industry. So on Saturday 7th
July, at the Goals Centre, Perry Barr,
Birmingham, the Fastener Industry Five A-side kicked off – sponsored by the British Association of Fastener Distributors and Fastener + Fixing Magazine. Eleven teams from across the UK fought it ought – not quite
literally – for the honour of being the very first holders of this quite unique fastener industry trophy.
But you said PTS won? Yes, quite right, the 2012 Fastener Industry Five A-side
winners are Precision Technology Supplies, winning 4:0 in the final against Mellish Engineering. At this point, before we mention that it would never have
happened without Jason Collyer’s commitment and organisation, and quietly put in that, yes, Jason is MD at PTS, we ought to mention that Goals did a great job of administering the whole competition under strict rules including the provision of FA qualified referees. Or in other words, we are still not quite sure how Jason managed to do it! Jason’s story is that it was all down to seven guys, who never
played as a team before, who just got better and better the longer the competition went on. As independent observers we’d have to say, he’s right. So congratulations to Sam Talman, Nick Lawson, Andy Westwood, Adrian Collins, Ray Levis, Karl Brown, Miguel
Commiserations to finalists Mellish Engineering, whose powerful
attack had them looking odds-on favourites for much of the competition, and runners up Beck Prosper Ltd and Montrose Group.
Next year? Oh yes, there’s definitely going to be a 2013 Fastener Industry
Five A-side - the teams were unanimous about that and with a such a prestigious trophy at stake no doubt there will be even more competition. All it needs now is the industry to ensure Jason keeps up the good work!
