Strong joints with little weight
WEICON GmbH & Co KG has developed two special adhesives for applications in the field of lightweight constructions – WEICON RK-Construction Adhesives RK-1300 and RK-1500.
W
EICON explains that to reach especially light constructions, the use of adhesives has become a well-established factor over the last few years. Besides the low weight, adhesives offer another
advantage compared to the previously prevailing riveted structures in that the stress concentration in large-surface joints is minimised and stress peaks, which otherwise could lead to damages, are reduced. WEICON points out that the characteristics of WEICON
RK-Adhesives are high strength, residual elasticity and impact resistance. They offer a fast and strong bonding power and can be used in a wide temperature range. RK-Construction Adhesives are two-component systems based on methacrylate which cure fast at room temperature. Both products are applied in a ‘no-mix’ process, which means that it is not necessary to mix adhesive and activator. Polymerisation only starts at the moment when the adhesive and activator-wetted surfaces are joined together. This allows adhesive joints without critical time restrictions. Curing starts with the chemical reaction between adhesive and activator in the bonding line. WEICON RK Adhesives can be used for high-strength bonding
of different materials like metals, plastics, fibre composite materials, wood, glass, ceramics and stone. Even coated metals can be bonded. The RK-Construction Adhesives can be used universally in
many industrial sectors. They are suitable for the automotive engineering, for machine and apparatus engineering, in electrical engineering or in the construction and furniture industry. Some points must be observed if RK-Construction Adhesives
are used. The surfaces to be joined must be clean, dry and free of grease. Depending on the size of the bonding gap, the RK Activator is applied on either one or both sides of the surfaces to be bonded. With large gaps (between 0.4mm and a maximum of 0.8mm) the activator should be applied on both sides. The evaporation time of the Activator is at least five minutes at
room temperature. Parts coated with the Activator can be stored for up to 30 days without loosing their effectiveness. The adhesive is then applied only on one side and normally on the surface that has not been coated with the Activator. Processing of the adhesive system should take place at room temperature. Higher temperatures shorten the positioning and the cure time, lower temperatures increase the respective times.
