manufacturer’s technical data, usually contained in the ETA and often best done via software. Simply changing to another anchor, which looks similar or has similar headline performance in a catalogue, is not good enough. Nor is a site test to a proof load. Neither of these approaches verifies the safety factor as thoroughly as the full design process. The manufacturer whose anchors you sell should be able to support you in changing specifications properly. The passing of correct information among the various
stakeholders is also a key feature – a whole section is devoted to it.
What else is in the Code? Inevitably a whole section is devoted to installation. The
installer should be competent, use the right tools and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The Code takes five pages to discuss that. If you also offer a testing service you will be interested to see
that the tester is treated as a key player in the fixings chain and allocated responsibilities, which include carrying out the test to the correct procedure and recording results. While the Code spells out the test regimes (how many tests, to
what load and how to analyse the results) the detailed procedures (how to apply the load, with what equipment, how to monitor movement) are to be published in a revised version of the CFA Guidance Note: Procedure for site testing construction fixings – 2012, which, along with several other CFA Guidance Notes, will be referred to in the Code.
“ Simply changing to another anchor, which looks similar or has similar headline performance in a catalogue, is not good enough.”
Capitalising on the opportunity By becoming familiar with the recommendations of the
Code you will be in a position to give appropriate advice to your customers. This will help safeguard your liability and possibly theirs. Used well it could help you sell premium products rather than unqualified ones at low margins. The existence of the Code of practice will not in itself
prevent a single accident or save a single life. Following its recommendations and encouraging those we have contact with to do the same just might.
