Polygonatum (Solomon’s Seal) SH, May-Jun, H18"-24", W18"-30", Sp 18", Z 3-8 These woodland plants add a graceful touch to shady areas. Arching stems hold neatly arranged oval leaves on one side and pen- dulous, 1 inch, tubular white fl owers on the other which become dark blue berries in the fall. The long-lived plants tolerate drought and competition from tree roots. Plant in cool, moist, humus-rich soil.

Potentilla (Cinquefoil) Usually only thought of as woody shrubs, the lovely small, clump-forming perennials in this genus have gained rapid popularity. The vig- orous plants have deep green strawberry-like foliage and bear open, branching clusters of rosette-like fl owers. They bloom heavily in early summer with rebloom continuing throughout the season. Excellent for the front of the border or rockery. Drought tolerant plants grow easily in any average, well-drained soil.

Pulmonaria (Lungwort) This genus for shade is identifi ed by its silvery spotted foliage and clusters of funnel-shaped fl owers. Plants form nice spreading clumps. Fo- liage may be semi-evergreen in mild climates. They do best in rich, moist soil, but are very adaptable.
