Cornus canadensis (Bunchberry) #A14707
PS/SH, May-Jun, H3"-8", W8"-12", Sp 12", Z 2-7 This distinctive deciduous groundcover is native to cool, damp woods in many parts of North America. A patch in bloom appears like a Flowering Dogwood buried to its outer- most twigs. The rhizomes constantly send up stems to form lovely dense patches. Each stem has 2 to 3 sets of overlapping leaves at its tip from which emerges a small knot of yellow- green flowers surrounded by 4 white bracts. The flowers eventually develop into clusters of striking red berries. Has purplish-red fall color. Thrives in moist, acidic soil. Excellent planted at the feet of acid-loving plants such as evergreens, rhododendrons and azaleas. 3P

Corydalis (Fumaria) A large genus of low-growing plants with finely divided foliage that lends a graceful note to lightly shaded areas of the garden or contain- ers. The flowers and foliage resembles bleed- ing hearts, but in shades of yellow, white, pur- ple or blue. Plant in well-drained soil.
